DAY 3 RECAP, from POLITICO's Kyle Cheney - "Democrats launched a sustained and withering attack Wednesday on Donald Trump, deploying the party's highest-caliber stars in prime time to land their fiercest blows yet on the Republican presidential nominee. 'His lack of empathy and compassion can be summed up in that phrase he is most proud of making famous, "you're fired,"' roared Vice President Joe Biden. 'He is trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. Give me a break. That is a bunch of malarkey.' ... Speakers like former CIA director Leon Panetta and retired Admiral John Hutson painted Trump as too volatile and erratic to hold the nuclear codes. Former New York City Mayor Michael
Bloomberg derided Trump as a 'dangerous demagogue.' ... Even President Barack Obama, whose speech was largely a rosy recollection of his presidency and a boost to Clinton, mentioned Trump six times. 'He's not really a plans guy. Not really a facts guy, either,' Obama said. 'He calls himself a business guy, which is true, but I have to say, I know plenty of businessmen and women who've achieved success without leaving a trail of lawsuits, and unpaid workers, and people feeling like they got cheated.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c1d6449dbdc3ca70b2923e4828bde466998dd19be26afab5dd

- Speech recaps: Obama, Biden, Tim Kaine.

HE SAID, HE SAID - "Huelskamp, U.S. Chamber trade shots over group's primary endorsement," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider: "GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are in a war of words ahead of Huelskamp's hard-fought GOP primary, with the Freedom Caucus member criticizing the Chamber as an 'insider organization' - and the Chamber's political director firing back that Huelskamp sought the group's endorsement before going negative on it. Huelskamp blasted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in a recent fundraising email to supporters, calling the group a 'D.C.-based insider organization [that] supports comprehensive immigration reform and amnesty.' But two Chamber officials say
that Huelskamp met with them twice earlier this year to lobby for the business group's support. ... Huelskamp insists he did no such thing." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c11a09e2ebf25fa3b95393518158b9846dd9fdf15548184b91

ON THE RECORD - POLITICO Pro Q&A: Arizona Democratic Senate candidate Ann Kirkpatrick," by Campaign Pro's Theodoric Meyer: Here are some highlights: "The most frequent thing I hear from people is that they're surprised that John McCain is supporting Trump. But they're even more surprised that he didn't stand up for himself when Trump insulted him. What they're saying to me is, "He won't stand up for himself, he's not going to stand up for us." ... "Can you carry the state even if Clinton doesn't? Yes. Yes. It's never been part of our win calculation to have them in Arizona." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c19b1b5250454996fbb6839a4e87b36c341b0c566bdfa644ef

FIRST IN SCORE - Counter-programming at the DNC, courtesy of the NRCC: The National Republican Campaign Committee is linking down-ballot Democrats to Hillary Clinton in digital ads (on Facebook and Youtube) and a mobile video billboard (driven around Philadelphia today), targeting convention attendees, that "looks back at the lies, scandals, and careless actions that have defined Hillary Clinton's career," per a memo from the committee. "The American people do not trust Hillary Clinton, and we intend to remind voters of House Democrats' unconditional support for her scandal-plagued campaign," said NRCC communications director Katie Martin in a statement. NEW THIS MORNING - Portman out with new ad on labor endorsements, via POLITICO's Seung Min Kim: "Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) scored two key endorsements this week from unions that had previously backed his Democratic challenger, Ted Strickland - and the GOP senator is all too eager to remind Strickland about it. In a new ad being released Thursday, Portman taunts Strickland for losing the support of the Ohio Teamsters and the state's Fraternal Order of Police, among other organizations. Both groups had endorsed Strickland in his previous gubernatorial runs in 2006 and 2010 - but changed their minds this time around and threw their support behind Portman."

MORE NEW THIS MORNING - PPIC Poll says Harris leads Sanchez by 18 points: "California Attorney General Kamala Harris leads Rep. Loretta Sanchez 38 percent to 20 percent in their Democrat-versus-Democrat Senate race, according to a new Public Policy Institute of California poll. More than one quarter of likely voters said they were not planning to vote in the Senate race in the general election, while 14 percent of voters are still undecided." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c1e040fe0c1a34606c5358f20620828cab92c037736ab949aa

BACK TO THE COURTROOM - Report says Duckworth's case appears headed to trial: "Democrats' Illinois Senate nominee, Rep. Tammy Duckworth, reached an agreement to settle a workplace retaliation lawsuit earlier this summer, but it appears that the suit is headed for trial after all after the two women suing Duckworth announced they're refusing to accept the settlement. The plaintiffs told the Daily Herald, which first reported the change of heart, that they decided to reverse course after they saw Duckworth campaign dismiss the lawsuit as a 'a frivolous workplace case' just after the initial settlement agreement was reached."

FLORIDA MAN'S CAMPAIGN UNRAVELS - "Grayson campaign unravels amid calls to quit," by POLITICO's Burgess Everett and Marc Caputo: "Rep. Alan Grayson's troubled Senate campaign continued to unravel on Wednesday, as several staffers resigned and a chorus of Democrats called on him to quit the race, including the party's future Senate leader. ...'I've never thought much about Grayson as a candidate ... And now it's of course much, much worse. He ought to do the right thing and drop out,' said Sen. Chuck Schumer, who's set to succeed Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid next year. Moments before Schumer made his comments, Grayson's political director and three field staffers announced they were
leaving his Senate campaign, according to The Tampa Bay Times. It is the second staff shakeup of his troubled campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c1a18ec7b6a3720ef9fa613f3e00aed0ba76130e01bccdbc4c

NEW TO THE AIRWAVES - In Indiana ... "GOP Rep. Todd Young is out with a new TV ad attacking former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, part of a six-figure buy in Indiana that criticizes Bayh's time in Washington and praises Young as part of Washington's 'next generation of leadership.'" - In Arizona ... "GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona is hitting the air with a new TV ad attacking his Democratic opponent, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, over her vote for Obamacare. ...The ad is the latest in a series of attacks on Kirkpatrick's support for the Affordable Care Act from McCain, who's been running on the issue even as other Republicans have put less focus on it this election cycle. Kirkpatrick has defended the law and called for changes that would address the problems it's facing in the state." Watch the ad here.

PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Trump goes it alone on Russia," by POLITICO's Katie Glueck: "A day after Hillary Clinton made history, Donald Trump turned history on its head. The nominee of the Republican Party - the party that takes credit for winning the Cold War - on Wednesday appeared to align himself with Russia over his Democratic opponent, in remarks that suggested to many he was urging Moscow to interfere in a U.S. election. That break with longstanding bipartisan policy toward dealing with Russia, or any foreign nation, for that matter, succeeded in getting him the lion's share of the media spotlight as Wednesday evening programming kicked off for rival Hillary Clinton's Democratic
National Convention. But it was a leap few fellow Republicans were ready to make - with some in the party suggesting it smacked of 'treason.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c171129c72d33c491cbd7d1b2c551e9248bc41651275dee255

- "Notebook: One Reality King Seeks the Overthrow of Another," by The New York Times' Alan Rappeport: "Jerry Springer, the television host whose talk show condones fist fights, mud wrestling and the occasional strip tease, is not easily offended. But Donald J. Trump has done it. Now, Mr. Springer, who was the Democratic mayor of Cincinnati in the 1970s, finds himself wandering the Democratic National Convention halls preaching about the need for more decorum and respect in politics. A pioneer of reality television, Mr. Springer brings unique insight into the Trump phenomenon, which has been fueled by controversy and free publicity. This week he is giving pep talks to state delegations and
donors here about why the Republican nominee must be toppled in November." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=deb8e6779833f4c123c60f0e22cc7b237ca5a7007ce4d08afb8dec959d63f86e

- "DNC And Clinton Campaign Operations Started Merging Before Sanders Dropped Out," by Buzzfeed's Ruby Cramer: "Hillary Clinton and Democratic National Committee staffers began the gradual process of merging operations and consolidating key campaign functions weeks before the primary ended, emails in last week's WikiLeaks release show. Starting in May, the staffs at the DNC and Hillary For America integrated their distribution of press and television clips and what's known as "media monitoring," a standard but robust and time-consuming research operation aimed at tracking a candidate's friends and foes around the clock on cable, local, and national news."

CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "You fell for my brilliant wife and partner Michelle, who's made me a better father and a better man; who's gone on to inspire our nation as First Lady; and who somehow hasn't aged a day. I know the same can't be said for me." - President Barack Obama, reminiscing and poking some fun at himself at the top of his DNC speech Wednesday night.
