Use the hashtags #ruinedforlife, #fjvlife, or #jvcnorthwest to show us your JVC Northwest pride! Senator Tim Kaine's Jesuit Connection JVC Northwest was excited to hear that Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine has a strong connection to the Jesuit world. Although he did not serve as a Jesuit Volunteer (he volunteered with Jesuits in Honduras, not as a JV) he has alluded to the fact that the Jesuit ideals instilled in him during high school and during his time in Honduras were some of the most formative years of his life. The Ignatian Solidarity Network further explores Tim Kaine's connection to the Jesuits here. Crossroads – Send in your FJV Update! We are preparing for the Fall 2016 edition of our biannual newsletter, Focus, and we’re asking former JVs to send in their news for Crossroads, the alumni updates section of the newsletter! This info can include weddings, awards, promotions, milestones, community reunions, or that time you met the Pope (and preferably took a picture of it!). Send in your 2-3 sentence blurb about the update, including a picture if possible, to Zach by August 15. New online community for FJVs! Connect with FJVs near and far Ever wonder how many FJVs live in your city? Or what the email address is for that long lost JV housemate? JVC Northwest is excited to launch a brand new directory to connect FJVs in the fall of 2016! You will be able to activate your account and find new and old folks that are "ruined for life" to meet up with in your city or connect with across the country and the world! Send a Note to a Jesuit Several Jesuits who have been very important to JVC Northwest and to many, many former JVs have transitioned and will be moving to the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA., including (but not limited to) Fred Mercy, Bob Fitts, Joseph Obersinner, and Bob Jones. If you would like to send a note of gratitude or well wishes, we'll be collecting them to mail in bulk in mid-August. Send your notes to JVC Northwest, PO Box 22125, Portland, OR 97269 or via email to Zach. Thanks for taking the time to do so! Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps (JV EnCorps) is now accepting applications for 2016-17! Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps (JV EnCorps), a program of JVC Northwest, facilitates transformative opportunities for intentional service, community, and spiritual formation for older adults committed to social and ecological justice. During their ten months of part-time volunteer service, participants ages 50 and older meet together regularly in community to deepen their spirituality and explore the four values. JV EnCorps groups are now in Bend, Portland, Seattle, and Spokane! Priority application deadline: August 15th. For more information, call 503.335.8202 or click here to apply. One Mission Mass & Blessing September 11, 2016, 1 pm, Loyola Jesuit Center, Portland, OR Join Oregon and California Provincial Fr. Scott Santarosa, SJ, (JVC: Newark, NJ '88-89) to celebrate the many Jesuit ministries of the greater Portland area, including JVC Northwest, and support the Jesuits in formation. Fr. Santarosa will preside at a celebratory mass beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a delicious lunch. Portland area JV communities and JV EnCorps members have the special opportunity to be recognized and blessed during the mass. Friends and family are also welcome to attend the event. Save the Date: JVC Northwest "Homecoming" Sponsored by Portland Alumni Council The Portland Alumni Council, a group of younger former JVs (FJVs) whose mission is to engage with Portland-area FJVs through events and activities while also gaining Board development skills, is coordinating an FJV “Homecoming” event at St. Ignatius Parish on September 17, 2016. The planning is underway but you can expect dancing, good food and drink, games, and maybe even a balloon arch. Interested in helping coordinate and/or attending? Email outreach@jvcnorthwest.org to get connected! Also, if you served as a JV in the last 10-15 years and are interested in learning more about the Portland Alumni Council, email Outreach and Events Coordinator, Zach, for more information. Events, Resources, & Reflections Faith in Action: Racial Justice Ignatian Solidarity Network Over the past year our country has experienced tremendous strife over the tragic losses of a number of young black men and women, including Michael Brown in St. Louis, Sandra Bland in Naperville, Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Eric Garner in New York City, Freddie Gray in Baltimore, and Laquan McDonald in Chicago. The deaths of these individuals and many others have renewed dialogue about what some have called “America’s original sin of racism.” Across the nation, people from all backgrounds–many of them for the first time–are confronting the destructive legacy wrought by generations of systemic and personal racial discrimination. The Ignatian Solidarity Network has created an evolving collection of resources from a Catholic, Jesuit perspective. Click here for more information.
