08/16/2016 07:57 AM EDT By Heather Caygle (hcaygle@politico.com or @heatherscope) KAINE: N.C. IS NOT FORGOTTEN-Hillary Clinton may have a nice lead in the polls here in North Carolina-the latest WSJ/NBC poll had her up 11 points-but that doesn't mean Democrats are going to check off the state and move on. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine is doing a mini-barnstorm through the battleground state yesterday and today, rallying with voters and squeezing in some retail politicking at a local BBQ joint and beer brewery. "We're here because North Carolina is really, really important this year," Kaine said to thunderous applause at a rally in Asheville Monday night. "I think Democrats are going to have a big, big win." More from yours truly: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8c0d38e7f701cc89cee50a48489d7e28523c1d8a6bac0366e5ea03f0733c6292 Kaine also touched on voting rights during the Asheville rally, a key theme in his stump speech lately. And it couldn't have been more timely. On Monday, North Carolina officials filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court asking the justices to reinstate key parts of the state's voter ID law that was ruled unconstitutional last month. Bob Poe mismanaged the Florida Democratic Party and was a serial philander. Susannah Randolph has a 'profane' Twitter feed in which she once re-tweeted a message calling Gov. Rick Scott 'a real Florida douchebag.' Don't blame Republicans for talking all this trash about these Florida Democratic congressional candidates. These hits were all contained in a series of background reports and strategy memos amassed by the [DCCC]," write Matt Dixon and Marc Caputo. The Washington Post's Paul Kane on what Cheney, an unabashed Trump supporter, would bring to the family brand if elected: "The Cowboy State could send a national firebrand to Congress who would, if Trump continues his spiral and loses the White House, become a next-generation leader in her family's image." "That the Cheneys have backed Trump surprises some longtime friends in Wyoming and creates tension among some donors," like former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, who don't support the GOP presidential nominee, Kane writes. "Her father quietly backs the GOP nominee, but he has kept an unusually low profile in his daughter's House race - rarely attending campaign events and saying little about Trump." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8c0d38e7f701cc8903f2a594b688f4338bb262531526e6431b24f9e08334966b REMEMBER THAT TIME? The Alaska primary is also today. Remember six years ago when Sen. Lisa Murkowski lost her primary to a tea party challenger and went on to win the general election as a write-in candidate? Well, that isn't likely to happen this year. "Murkowski is expected to easily win her Tuesday primary, setting her up for a general election with nominal Democratic opposition. Murkowski learned from that 2010 scare, and national Republicans say her more aggressive campaign this election cycle deterred would-be primary opponents," writes Roll Call's Simone Pathé. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8c0d38e7f701cc89bcfeb58f12608f8c1b5bc978e38ef144ba25142514c89284 THANKS FOR TUNING IN, Y'ALL. Welcome to Tuesday, August 16. You're reading POLITICO's Huddle, the play-by-play guide to all things Capitol Hill. Huddle is coming to you from the rolling pine-covered hills of North Carolina. Yours truly will be trailing Sen. Tim Kaine this week while our regular suburban dad beat reporter Burgess Everett is on vacation. TODAY IN CONGRESS - Back in session countdown: 21 days AROUND THE HILL- Sleepy staffers dreaming about their Labor Day beach vacation: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8c0d38e7f701cc8949c92da96c5bc8ac35ca7dca69c784971cbaa5a59680aa3f MOVE THAT MONEY DOWN BALLOT, GOP LAWMAKERS SAY-- More Republicans are adding their names to the GOP letter calling on the RNC to shift funds away from Donald Trump's campaign and move those dollars down ballot. "Virginia Rep. Scott Rigell and Wisconsin Rep. Reid Ribble, both of whom are retiring, added their names to the request, along with former Reps. Bob Inglis, of South Carolina, and Jim Kolbe, of Arizona, said GOP operative Andrew Weinstein. Weinstein, who is coordinating the letter drive, said he now has 110 Republicans who have signed on," reports CNN's Dana Bash and Tom LoBianco. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8c0d38e7f701cc897d0849289f5f2d8dec8759da3ddb0df940f217493380e962 WE'RE OUTTA HERE-One Nation, the GOP fundraising group linked to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is feeling so good about how Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is doing in his race against Ted Strickland, it has canceled a $2.8 million advertising reservation, reports the Wall Street Journal's Michelle Hackman. "One Nation, founded last year by Steven Law, Mr. McConnell's former chief of staff, raised $34 million from its founding in May 2015 to June. ...The race is the single most expensive Senate contest in the nation, according to the center for Responsive Politics, with the candidates, their parties and outside groups spending over $33 million to date, the majority of which was spent in favor of Mr. Portman." 'This is not going to be an easy task and it's going to take all of us rowing together,' Jeff Weaver said," on the private call with top DNC officials, reports Daniel Strauss. Makin' it rain: "Sanders' organization Our Revolution has raised nearly $300,000 for liberal Democratic down-ballot and congressional candidates," according to Weaver. The target this time? Who else but Donald Trump. On Monday, ahead of Trump's call for immigrants to take a "ideological test" before entering the U.S., Reid challenged Trump to take the current citizenship test. "He would almost certainly fail, given his general ignorance and weak grasp of basic facts about American history, principles and functioning of our government," Reid said in a press release. Buckley. TODAY'S TRIVIA - James with today's question: What former lawmaker published a four-volume history of his/her chamber and what was the title of the multi-volume work?
