The former U.S. attorney general is listed as a "special guest" on a fundraising invite for Steve Dettelbach, candidate for Ohio attorney general. She is slated to attend the Sept. 25 event in Shaker Heights, Ohio. One veteran Democratic political operative told us this is her "first political event on the stump for candidates ... HEALTH CARE BUZZ -- Senate Republicans are frustrated the White House is divided over the future of the Cassidy-Graham bill, with some predicting its failure. Waffling from the White House doesn't help their cause as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his deputies have doubled down on a vote next week, trying to convert Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) to 'yes' votes. It also undermines calls President Donald Trump is making to rally support for the legislation. ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES -- "DeVos scraps Obama-era school sexual assault policy, issues interim guidance," by Kimberly Hefling: "Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Friday that the department is rescinding Obama-era guidance on school sexual assault. The agency issued a question-and-answer document to help schools navigate the highly contentious issue while a formal review is conducted. 'As I said earlier this month, the era of rule by letter is over. The Department of Education will follow the proper legal procedures to craft a new Title IX regulation that better serves students and schools,' DeVos said in a statement. ...

"What hadn't been clear before Friday was when the Obama-era guidance would be withdrawn and what temporary instructions would be in place in the meantime. The announcement, however, was unlikely to propel schools to change policy as the issue is addressed in Washington. HMM -- "Sebastian Gorka Gave A Classified 'Tirade' About Radical Islam," by BuzzFeed News' Jason Leopold: "A couple of weeks before he was ousted as deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, Sebastian Gorka gave an explosive two-and-a-half-hour speech to the U.S. Army's special operations school, which an officer who was present characterized as a 'tirade' about the war in Afghanistan, Sharia law, radical Islamic terrorism, and the Trump administration's aggressive policies to counter and 'defeat it all.' It was 'classic Gorka,' said another U.S. Army special operations officer. BuzzFeed News learned about the speech, which was classified, through documents obtained in response to a
Freedom of Information Act request. ...

"Administrators at the institute proposed having Gorka deliver his speech a second time, at the 400-seat Kennedy Hall auditorium at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center, as part of the facility's 'distinguished lecture series.' But Gorka's appearance at the larger venue was abruptly canceled the day it was to take place. The spokesperson chalked it up to a misunderstanding by special operations personnel. ... Two special operations officers said they were told by their superiors that Marine General John Kelly, the White House chief of staff, prohibited Gorka from speaking in a public setting while he was still employed as the deputy assistant to the president. CAMPAIGN FINANCE WATCH -- "Morgantown coal operator Laurita indicted in alleged campaign finance scheme," by the Charleston Gazette-Mail's Ken Ward: "Morgantown coal operator James L. Laurita Jr. allegedly schemed for more than three years to funnel illegal campaign contributions to four candidates for federal political office, according to an indictment made public this week. A federal grand jury meeting in Morgantown indicted Laurita on eight felony counts in the scheme, which prosecutors say involved illegally directing money from Laurita's company, Mepco LLC, through its employees to the federal candidates. The indictment also charges Laurita with contributions that violated federal
election limits, and with causing false statements about the contributions to be submitted to the Federal Elections Commission. ...

NEW WHAT WORKS -- "Can Brain Science Save Lives in Chicago?": Last year, 764 people were murdered in Chicago, almost one in five of them age 19 or younger. Most of these crimes were committed as an act of revenge or retaliation.
