Former GSA chief lands at $2 billion real estate firm - The Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/digger/wp/2015/02/26/former-gsa-chief-lands-at-2-billion-real-estate-firm/ Former GSA chief lands at $2 billion real estate firm Dan Tangherlini, then with the General Services Administration , before a Senate panel in 2012. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) After more than 20 years working in government, Dan Tangherlini is getting out. Tangherlini took over the General Services Administration, which manages real estate for the federal government, in the wake of a conference spending scandal <http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/gsa-chief-resigns-amid-reports-of-excessive-spending/2012/04/02/gIQABLNNrS_story.html> in 2012. He announced <http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/digger/wp/2015/01/15/dan-tangherlini-to-leave-gsa-in-feb/> he would leave last month and his final day was Feb. 14. Denise Turner Roth <http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/100046> is serving as interim administrator. His new job is as chief operating officer of a firm, Artemis Real Estate Partners <http://www.artemisrep.com/>, that has raised $2 billion in real estate capital since its founding in 2009. Based in Chevy Chase, the firm places money across the U.S. in office, housing, retail, industrial and other properties. Tangherlini has connections at nearly every level of government associated with real estate in Washington. Locally, he served under mayors Anthony A. Williams and Adrian M. Fenty for the District government, doing stints as transportation director, deputy mayor and city administrator. He was also an interim director of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. For the federal government he has worked at the Treasury Department, the Department of Transportation, the Office of Management and Budget and the GSA. Operating under austerity measures, he proposed complex real estate swaps aimed at building a new headquarters for the FBI <http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/digger/wp/2014/07/29/list-narrows-for-future-fbi-headquarters-greenbelt-landover-or-springfield/> and a new neighborhood south of the National Mall, called Federal Triangle South <http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-business/post/gsa-proposes-massive-overhaul-of-southwest-office-buildings-into-a-new-federal-triangle-south/2012/09/28/fc3d936c-099c-11e2-a10c-fa5a255a9258_blog.html> . At Artemis, he is joining Deborah Harmon, Artemis chief executive and former president of J. E. Robert Cos., who co-founded the firm with Penny Pritzker. The firm’s local properties include Carlyle Center, an Alexandria office building, and Springfield Corporate Center, according to data from CoStar Group. “Dan’s wealth of experience and leadership in fiscal and operational management will enable him to be a valuable partner as Artemis continues its significant growth,” Harmon, said in a statement. “We are excited to work with Dan to implement institutional and operational best practices while maintaining our entrepreneurial culture.” Tangherlini’s first day will be March 30.
