Dear Friends, At record enrollment, we are entering our fourth week of classes in our 17^th school year. We welcomed 38 new students to a rigorous program that will change the trajectory of the their lives. With a “full house” of 92 students, our newest students have already adjusted to the demands of school days that dismiss at 5pm, have a focus on goal-setting, culture of achievement, and an academic program where reading 50 books a year is the norm. Your support of our mission at the beginning of the school year makes a difference as we open the doors to disadvantaged children who will grow to be successful scholars at the areas most challenging college preparatory high schools. After reviewing our school update, please feel free to contact us to schedule a visit. Our students are eager to welcome guests and practice their social skills. Sincerely, Don Mullikin President “Changing the Trajectory of Lives for 17 Years!” Taking on the San Miguel Challenge Students from the public school system, 38 in total, are finishing their first month in an academic model that will change their lives. Only at San Miguel can you be challenged in an extended fashion in STEM, Humanities, and Social Emotional Learning. Our Principal, Mr. David Palank, shares his thoughts about our new students: "This group of 6th graders are already opening their Independent Reading books during their down time. They seem really happy to be here and are already developing a sense of camaraderie. They are polite, kind and enthusiastic about getting to know their fellow classmates. They also have a wide variety of interests including: soccer, tennis, music, chess, robotics, basketball, drama, and art. This group is certainly the most diverse in terms of interest we've had at San Miguel." New Faculty Join Our Academic Team We welcome five new faculty members, including two full-time Lasallian Volunteers, with diverse backgrounds in education and life. Each compliments and reinforces our existing faculty. We are incredibly blessed as they join our San Miguel family. Lasallian Volunteers commit two years of their life to volunteering in support of the Lasallian mission of service to the poor. Mr. Kyle Fahsel: Mr. Fahsel (pronounced “fossil”) is entering his 10th year in education. He comes to San Miguel from DC Prep Charter School as their 5th grade team leader and Literacy teacher. Mr. Fahsel also co-founded the Technology Leadership High School, New Mexico Center for School Leadership in Albuquerque, NM. Kyle began his academic journey as a volunteer with the Teach for America program. This year, he is scheduled to receive his Doctorate from The John Hopkins University. At San Miguel: Mr. Fahsel teaches 8th grade Algebra and 7th grade Language Arts, while bringing his experience in "best practices" to the broader team. Mr. Tim Foley: Mr. Foley graduated from Northeastern University in Massachusetts with a BA in Journalism. During his co-op program, he worked at the Boston Globe and Zipcar. He dedicated significant time and energy to the Catholic Center at Northeastern, while he also led service trips, retreats, and spiritual inspiration for the staff. At San Miguel: As a full-time Lasallian Volunteer, Mr. Foley is responsible for our library, teaching Miguel/Religion Class, Physical Education Class, and guiding students in their Independent Reading. Ms. Michele Monk: Ms. Monk is entering her 8th year in education. Most recently, she was Assistant Principal at St. Peter’s in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill, where she taught middle school math. Prior to that, she served as the Lower School Dean of Instruction at St. Peter’s while teaching third grade. Her teaching career began through the ACE Program (Notre Dame). Michele is finishing her Master’s of Educational Leadership from Notre Dame. At San Miguel: Ms. Monk teaches Miguel/Religion, 8th grade Math, 6th grade math, and is the school's Data and Assessment Coordinator. Mr. Edwin Luna: With a BS in Biology from Loyola University New Orleans, Mr. Luna benefited from a “Miguel” education on the West Coast and has since interned at San Miguel over the years and volunteered in remote areas of Colombia working with indigenous populations. Mr. Luna stated, “I firmly believe in the school's mission and know that this school is making a tremendous difference in each student’s life, not just at home but professionally. I am excited to have the opportunity to be able to work with San Miguel, give back, and be a part of its future success.” At San Miguel: Mr. Luna teaches advanced 7th grade math and technology classes focused on software coding. He will also assist Mr. Motta with graduate support. Mr. Ben Peters: Mr. Peters graduated from St. Mary's University in Winona, MN with a BA in Philosophy/History while spending his first two years in the seminary at St. Mary’s. Mr. Peters is an actor and writer with numerous performances, and he recently appeared in "Is There anyone in the House" as part of the Mantorville, MN Theater Co. He is also an experienced coach in swimming and diving. At San Miguel: Mr. Peters joins us as a Lasallian Volunteer, and teaches Miguel/Religion, Independent Reading, and will be guiding 8th graders through their high school application process. Getting a Head Start on Leadership San Miguel's rising 8th graders completed a week-long Leadership Camp sponsored by "Servant Leadership Seminar Corp." of Washington, DC. The future student leaders explored the characteristics of what it means to be a servant leader, through a variety of learning scenarios. Student leaders took a field trip to Georgetown University and the United States Naval Academy. At the Naval Academy, Capt. Rick Rubel, USN, Professor of Ethics and Leadership, gave them a behind the scenes look at naval leadership. A highlight of this year's Leadership Camp was a visit from Mr. Christopher Themistos, Principal of St. John's College High School. Along with Mr. Themistos, the students learned from Mrs. Carol Maloney, a career television sportscaster, most recently working her magic at WRC-TV. Time, Talent, and Treasure San Miguel's success is a reflection of our volunteers. Everyday, volunteers come in and work with our students, one-on-one. They give their time and talent to work with the students to strengthen understanding of subjects in which they are weak. We welcome volunteers to share their wealth of knowledge and talents with our students. And there are many ways to volunteer: * Can you help a student with Language Arts or Math? * How about listening to a student read aloud? * Would you like to arrange a field trip? * Can you work on a special event? Please contact Mr. Kevin Hiler at volunteer@sanmigueldc.org (mailto:volunteer@sanmigueldc.org) if you are interested in volunteering, or have any activities or resources you would like to share with our school and students. Scenes Around the School Fr. Raymond "Ray" O'Brien of Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America, celebrated the Assumption mass for students, faculty, and staff on August 15th. CT Strategies demonstrated their manual labor skills this summer, helping to move furniture and prepare the entire school space for returning students. Carlos Mateos, owner of more than 20 McDonald's in the DC area, provided meals for parents during back-to-school orientation for the 6th grade class. Keep our mission alive!
