Supporters of equal rights for all Americans, like me, have cause for optimism.

For the first time in history, a majority of Americans -- 53 percent -- believe same-sex couples deserve the same right to marry as everybody else.

Just last month, our nation made historic progress in New York with its dramatic -- and bipartisan -- approval of marriage equality legislation.

While momentum is on our side, we can't forget that many LGBT youth face daily torment and bullying over their sexuality -- and often have nobody they can turn to for support. It's up to us to reassure these young people that it will get better.

That's why I recently led an effort with 12 of my Senate colleagues to produce a video for the "It Gets Better" project, encouraging LGBT youth to not give up:

As a senator, it is my responsibility to not only talk about how things will get better, but work to ensure that they do.

That's why I am pleased to announce that tomorrow, I will chair the second panel of the landmark hearing to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

This hearing is an important step forward in removing discrimination from federal law, allowing same-sex couples to enjoy the same rights that my wife and I enjoy. I will be back in touch after the hearing to let you know how it went, and tell you how you can help us repeal DOMA.
