*Dear Hunter,I hope you’ve been well, and that you had a chance to enjoy some summer time off even in this very unusual year. I’m reaching out to share the news that I will be leaving Truman at the end of this month, in order to serve as President & CEO of Human Rights First. I am both sad to be leaving such a wonderful staff and community of members, and honored by the opportunity to lead an organization I have long admired at this pivotal time.I cannot thank you enough for the support you continue to provide for Truman, and on a personal note, the guidance you have shared with me over the years. I know how deeply you believe in the mission and values of the Truman community, and so I hope I can count on you to continue your investment in this good work.I hope we can connect either in person or over the phone in the coming weeks, both to talk more about my transition and so that I can introduce you to the fantastic individual who will be leading Truman as the interim Executive Director: Bishop Garrison. Bishop is a long-time Truman member, and brings an incredible background as a veteran of the Iraq War, the Obama administration, and two presidential campaigns. More importantly, he shares a passion for our organization and the people we serve, along with a bones-deep commitment to the values that define Truman. We could not be in better hands.Thank you again for your continuing support, friendship, and belief in this organization we have built together. I look forward to speaking with you soon!Mike * FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 06 September 2018 Contact: Graham West, gwest@trumanproject.org Truman Center and Truman Project Announce Leadership Transition Washington, DC – Today, Truman Center for National Policy and Truman National Security Project, in coordination with Human Rights First, announced that Truman President and CEO Michael Breen will become the new President and CEO of Human Rights First. Truman’s governing boards have asked Bishop Garrison, Managing Director of Policy and Advocacy, to serve as Truman’s interim Executive Director. Breen originally joined the Truman community in 2010 as a Truman Fellow and came on staff in 2011. Throughout his time at Truman, his leadership fostered an extraordinary growth in the organization’s membership as well as its political and policy capacity, reach, and impact. His vision and values will inform the organization’s continued success long after his departure, and his personal mentorship of and friendship with many Truman members and staff was and remains invaluable. Breen remarked, “It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the Truman community for the past eight years. Our policy achievements, hard fought and won together, certainly matter, but what is truly enduring is the community we have built and grown. As I move on to this new challenge, I have tremendous faith and confidence in Truman’s leadership team, staff, and membership to continue that important work.” Breen will formally leave his leadership post to begin his duties at Human Rights First beginning on 01 October 2018. In the interim, Truman’s governing boards have asked Bishop Garrison, longtime Truman member and recently hired Managing Director of Policy and Advocacy, to serve as interim Executive Director. Garrison joined the Truman community as a member of the Defense Council in 2013. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who served two tours in Iraq; a former political appointee in the Obama Administration’s Department of Defense, Department of Veteran Affairs, and Department of Homeland Security; and the former Deputy Foreign Policy Advisor on Secretary Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. On the basis of his considerable experience and dedication to Truman’s mission and values, Garrison is well equipped to lead the organization’s work in the immediate term. Garrison said, “I am humbled by the board's trust and confidence. The Truman community means a great deal to me personally, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to help lead it at such a pivotal moment. I thank Michael for his dedication and years of leadership to this organization. He has created an amazing foundation to build upon and a standard to follow that will not soon be forgotten.” *Truman is a nationwide membership of diverse leaders inspired to serve in the aftermath of 9/11 and committed to shaping and advocating for tough, smart national security solutions.
