Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman hosted our first ever Training Salon for an exclusive, external audience and continued recruiting for the class of 2019. In addition, Truman President and CEO Michael Breen appeared on HillTV’s Rising.


Pam Campos-Palma
Pam Campos-Palma is a political strategist working at the intersection of international peace and security, civics, and social change, bridging the grassroots and grass tops on the front lines of the contemporary resistance movement. She served in the U.S. Air Force for more than a decade as an operations intelligence analyst specializing in geopolitical affairs, anti/counter terrorism, and force protection with duty in Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. She has organized around immigrant rights and political parity, worked for Senator Jeff Merkley, and was appointed by then-Governor Kitzhaber as a founding Trustee for Oregon's largest public university. Currently, Campos-Palma forms part of the executive team of Beyond The Choir, a political strategy and training group that
partners with movement organizations to reach broader bases, where she oversees their Veterans Organizing Institute. Simultaneously, she is the Executive Director of Common Defense, a national grassroots organization that mobilizes military veterans and families against bigotry and hate and builds a more equitable democracy. She holds a Master of Public Administration from NYU with a focus in International Policy and Management and is a member of Truman National Security Project's Defense Council.


Of late, Campos-Palma has been vocal on opposing the Trump Administration’s immoral and unlawful separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border; advocating for the inclusion of people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and other minorities in the armed forces; and supporting community mobilization during the 2018 midterm election season. She was most recently on a

podcast with 2 Vets Upstate (hosted by Truman members Roger Misso and Andrea Goldstein) talking about how to engage and connect with, rather than retreat from, those who have different lived experiences.


Training Salon
On 21 August, Truman hosted our first ever Training Salon.

This event was held for an exclusive audience of about 15 individuals who are top-tier executives and decision-makers from the public, private, and political sectors. We discussed our full training program and showcased four trainings: Military 101, Defending Democracy, Bridging the Gap, and Strategic Communications. New Managing Director of Policy and Advocacy Bishop Garrison, Director of Training and Public Engagement Anthony Robinson, Communications Director Graham West, and Senior Policy Program Manager Kate Guy participated as Certified Truman Trainers for the event. Ultimately, we found that training salons are a great way to promote our trainings in front of potential clients, as well as form partnerships for future collaborations. We look forward to putting on events similar to
this in cities across the country in the coming year.

Breen on Hill Rising

appeared on HillTV’s Rising to talk about current personnel drama in the Trump Administration and the military parade.

The panel featured Breen and conservative commentator Lawrence Jones alongside hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton. The panel first discussed the release of tapes by former White House aide Omarosa Manigault; Breen stated that Manigault’s latest release demonstrated “the kind of endless personnel drama that surrounds this administration,” just like the now-concluded trial of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. This is no way, Breen said, “to run a nuclear-armed superpower.” The conversation also touched on President Trump’s military parade, which

new estimates put at $92 million. As Breen argued, the parade is an expensive and divisive issue that is ultimately another vanity project by the president that diminishes the concept of civilian oversight over a highly professional, nonpartisan military by using it as a political prop. “This is the last thing in the world you want to ask the military to focus on,” Breen said.
