Democratic Sen. Tom Carper survived a primary challenge in Delaware Thursday night, defeating Air Force veteran Kerri Harris.

Carper had 64 percent of the primary vote to Harris' 36 percent when the Associated Press called the race with 72 percent of precincts reporting.

Harris, a biracial lesbian endorsed by a slew of progressive groups involved in other liberal challenges to entrenched incumbents, used Carper's four moderate decades in statewide office against him. She cast Carper as increasingly out of step with the Democratic Party on issues including banking regulations and the environment, but was unable to get the same traction that her ally Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez generated in New York in June, when she upset Rep. Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary.
