Pension row talks held
The final scheduled talks on UK public sector pension reform between trade union chiefs and the government take place in London. On Thursday up to 750,000 civil servants, teachers and lecturers are due to hold a one-day strike, the first of a series of planned walkouts.

Asset allocation analysed
The annual conference
of the European Capital Markets Institute in Brussels discusses the challenges for global asset allocation. Specific topics include systemic risk, asset management, and economic and regulatory challenges for capital markets.

US House takes break
The US House of Representatives goes into recess before the Independence Day holiday, returning on July 5.

US-India economic summit
Tim Geithner, US Treasury secretary, and Pranab Mukherjee, India’s finance minister, hold talks in Washington under the auspices of the US-India Economic and Financial
Partnership.

Growth prospects debated
How growth and prosperity can be restored to the UK economy will be debated at the Business Summit, staged in London by the CBI employers’ group and Management Today. Speakers include Francis Maude, minister for the cabinet office and paymaster general, and leading business executives.

Competitiveness analysed
The BritishAmerican Business Conference in London discusses the challenge that global competitiveness presents to the US and Europe, and how business and governments can respond.

IMF begins selection talks
The executive
board of the International Monetary Fund is due to begin discussing in Washington the strengths of the two candidates for the post of managing director, Agustín Carstens and Christine Lagarde. The board intends to reach a decision by June 30.

Energy leaders assemble
The two-day Financial Times Global Energy Leaders Summit opens in London, discussing the rapidly changing character of global energy.

Motor manufacturers meet
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ International Automotive Summit is held in London, covering topics such as retail, the supply chain,
international investment and low-carbon technologies. This year’s keynote speaker is Stephen T Odell, chairman and chief executive of Ford of Europe.

Broadcasting issues aired
The two-day Future of Broadcasting conference in London considers issues such as audiences, advertising and regulation.

Suu Kyi gives lecture
Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, gives the first of two Reith Lectures on BBC Radio 4. Ms Suu Kyi will reflect on human aspiration for freedom and her experience of years under house arrest.

Bankers confer on future
The British Bankers’ Association stages its international banking conference in London, with leading executives focusing on regulation and the industry’s future direction.

Security under review
The Annual Security Review Conference opens in Vienna (until July 1), considering topics such as transnational threats, conflict prevention and arms control.

Bacon and Warhol for sale
Sotheby’s holds a contemporary art auction in London featuring Francis Bacon’s “Crouching Nude”, valued at £7m-£9m, and two Andy Warhol paintings: “Campbell’s Soup Can (Tomato)” (£3.5m-£4.5m) and his portrait of Debbie Harry (£3.5m-£5.5m).

European’s set sail
The European Sailing Championships begin in Helsinki, Finland (until July 15).

The European Union’s free trade agreement with South Korea, the bloc’s first with an Asian country, takes effect.

UK bribery law changes
The UK Bribery Act, designed to tackle corruption in both the public and private sectors at home and abroad, comes into effect.

Referendum in Morocco
Moroccans vote on a proposed new constitution offering more democratic political structures.

Copa América kicks off
The Copa América, South America’s national soccer championships, begins in Argentina (until July 24).

Saturday

Tour de France begins
The Tour de France, the world’s leading cycling road race, begins at Passage du Gois in the Vendée region on the west coast (until July 24). Competitors will cover a total of 3,430.5km.

Boxing’s big showdown
Britain’s David Haye fights Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine in Hamburg, with three world heavyweight titles at stake.

Sunday

Election in Thailand
Thailand holds a general election, in which prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s Democrat party hopes to gain a clear mandate.
