Ex-Biden aide named to high-level job with auto lobbying group

A former campaign aide to Vice President Joe Biden was named to a senior position with a trade group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers.

American Automotive Policy Council President Matt Blunt said today Robert Engel had been named vice president for domestic policy for the trade association representing the policy interests of General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.

Engel was deputy campaign manager for then-Sen. Joe Biden's 1988 presidential campaign.

Engel joins AAPC's bipartisan team that includes Blunt, a former Republican Missouri governor; and Debbie Dingell, chair of the Manufacturing Initiative and a strategic consultant to AAPC, who is an influential member of the Democratic National Committee.

"Rob knows how to make things happen in our nation's capital, and he is committed to the success of the domestic auto industry. I look forward to working with him to ensure the American auto industry continues to be promoted as an essential component to our nation's economic and competitive success," Blunt said.

For the past 30 years, Engel has worked for several members of Congress. His experience includes serving as a U.S. Senate staffer for Sens. Adlai E. Stevenson III and Alan J. Dixon of Illinois and as a campaign aide to Biden and Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut. Engel served as political director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and as executive director of the Democratic National Committee.

"I am truly excited to join AAPC and for the opportunity to work with Gov. Blunt and our member companies to promote the American auto industry's integral contributions to the U.S. economy," Engel said.

He has also served as program director with the National Committee for an Effective Congress.

AAPC has traditionally focused on trade issues — where Detroit automakers disagree with foreign automakers — but has been expanding its role into other issues.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers — a Washington, D.C.-based group representing Detroit's Big Three, Toyota Motor Corp. and eight others — works on auto safety, energy, fuel economy and other issues.
