German-Russian summit
Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, and Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, together with entourages of ministers and business leaders, begin a two-day meeting in Hanover at which they are due to sign a range of business deals and pacts deepening political co-operation.

Foreign affairs discussed
European Union foreign
ministers attend a two-day meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

Bank account right urged
The European Commission in Brussels issues a recommendation to European Union states to ensure that consumers have access to a basic bank account if they need one. Such an account would enable people to receive, place, transfer and withdraw funds, with the aim of combating financial and social exclusion.

Saving policies suggested
The Social Market Foundation think-tank launches two reports in London – one by its own researchers and the other by Bristol University –
on the financial behaviour of lower-income groups. Both offer policy suggestions to help increase saving.

Forecast for UK published
The Ernst & Young Item Club’s summer forecast for the UK economy is scheduled to be published.

Speaker of Lords named
The result of last week’s election for the Speaker of the UK House of Lords is announced.

Computer experts assemble
The four-day WORLDCOMP – World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing – begins in Las Vegas.

Mandela’s 93rd birthday
Nelson Mandela, the former president
of South Africa and Nobel peace prize winner, celebrates his 93rd birthday.

Flexible working backed
Demos, the UK think-tank, launches in London its Reinventing the Workplace pamphlet that promotes the social and economic benefits of flexible working.

UK parliament takes break
The House of Commons is due to begin its summer recess, with the House of Lords following a day later. Both return on September 5.

Wednesday
JULY 20

Banking moves proposed
The European Commission proposes more stringent requirements for banks
and investment companies to strengthen Europe’s financial system. The proposals relate to capital requirements, liquidity, risk and governance.

Shuttle’s final touchdown
Atlantis is due to land at the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, bringing an end to the US space shuttle programme on its return from the International Space Station.

World trade report issued
The World Trade Organisation launches its annual World Trade Report in Geneva. The report covers trade trends, policy issues and the multilateral trading system.

Marketing world gathers
The World Marketing Congress, staged by the Academy of Marketing Science, begins in Reims, France (until July 23). The congress covers a wide range of issues, including advertising, social media, research and consumer behaviour.

Asian trade analysed
“Engaging the Dynamic Asian Economies” is the title of the Washington International Trade Association’s global services summit staged in the US capital.

JULY 21

N Korean threat assessed
A dossier assessing the security challenges posed by North Korea is presented by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. It assesses the country’s nuclear, chemical, biological and missile programmes, its conventional forces and non-military threats.

Climate change examined
The Third International Conference on Climate Change begins in Rio de Janeiro (until July 22).

England take on India
The first of four cricket Tests between England and India begins at Lord’s, London (until July 25).

Friday
JULY 22

Clinton at Asia summit
Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, and Eric Schmidt, Google chairman, speak at the three-day Asean Regional Entrepreneurship Summit in Bali. More than 200 business leaders from Asian countries are expected to attend.

EU budget debated
The European Union budget is discussed by finance ministers in Brussels.

Fifa bribery hearing
The ethics committee of Fifa, soccer’s world governing body, examines over two days bribery allegations against Mohamed bin Hammam and Caribbean Football Union officials Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester. The allegations relate to Mr Hammam’s aborted campaign for the Fifa presidency.

Fun of the country fair
Country sports and pursuits, such as shooting, fishing, hunting and falconry, are featured at The CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire (until July 24).

Saturday
JULY 23

Royal bridal dress on show
The Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, together with her bridal tiara, shoes and earrings, are on display when Buckingham Palace begins its annual public opening (until October 3).

Tri-Nations rugby begins
Australia play South Africa in Sydney in the opening fixture of this year’s Tri-Nations rugby union tournament.

Horses chase £1m bounty
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, offering £1m in prize money, is run at Ascot, west of London.

Khan boxes Judah
British boxer Amir Khan fights Zab Judah of the US in Las Vegas, with their respective WBA and IBF world light-welterweight titles at stake.

Sunday
JULY 24

Tour race runs its course
This year’s Tour de France cycling race ends in Paris.

Copa América soccer final
The final of the Copa América, South America’s national tournament, is played in Buenos Aires.
