About the Class generally.

Introduction

This course examines the impact of advocacy on political leaders, staff, and other stakeholders responsible for shaping international policy and managing global crisis and conflict. The course uses a case format to study examples of advocacy in five real world situations. Each case will consist of two parts:

1.

Discussion of an issue, policy, or event based on assigned reading(s);

2.

An interactive group session with a policymaker, staff member, or other principal stakeholder who played a significant role or who has specific expertise or who played in the subject of the case study.

Course Objectives & Skill Acquisition

Our objective is to build a pragmatic understanding of thepractice and impact of advocacy within the development and implementation of public policy and the management of complex global issues and problems, such as famine, health pandemics, war, and acts of terrorism. The course will build practical skills, including: the ability to identify, evaluate, and formulate effective advocacy strategies and tactics; and the ability to develop common practitioner tools, such as concise briefing and messaging materials used in advocacy initiatives. We will focus on reinforcing skills of concise and effective written and oral argument through: 1) Socratic method class sessions; 2) discussion and critical evaluations of assigned readings; 3) brief written assignments focused on direct and concise communication of messaging and supporting proof points.

Course Structure

Our first class on January 15 will include a detailed description of the course structure and requirements. The class on January 22 will focus on a discussion with an experienced advocate anda former elected official. The purpose of this class is to explore some common roles, responsibilities, and experiences among practitioners and consumers of advocacy. The heart of our course will be five “case studies” focused on a series of global events and policy problems that illustrate various perspectives on advocacy.

Each case will be covered over the course of two class sessionsas follows:

•

Session One: A brief introduction to frame the issue, followed by a group discussion of the topic, basedprimarily on assigned readings. These sessions will be interactive and participation by the entire group is expected. Introduction of additional readings and research by students is welcome. Students will submit a one-page issue briefing as part of their preparation for these sessions (please see “Course Requirements”).

•

Session Two: This portion of the case study will feature outside guests who have special expertise or first-hand experience with our topic. These sessions will be interactive and constructive participation is expected.

I just spoke to Hunter. Let's see if this makes sense and can work - Plan to hold the class at State regardless of whether Secretary Kerry is in town or away.

David, Hunter would like to know if you could suggest an interesting and appropriate person to stand in to cover the topic of Syria?

Thanks,

Katie

Thank you David – we just connected via phone!

Katie – per our conversation, let’s tough base Monday morning, about the possibility of making this happen Tuesday evening, per the original plan. As I mentioned, in case this does not work out, and Hunter is interested in scheduling another day while class is in session during April, I believe we could get scheduled one of those days in mid-April.

Look forward to touching base either this weekend, or Monday,

Julie

Thanks Katie: I'm adding Julie and John. So far so good -- always a possibility that over the weekend something changes and we learn that the Secretary has to travel -- but so far we think he will still be in Washington. Julie and John are terrific and they'll know what information we'll need for the students so they can get inside the building.
Best,
David

Hello Mr. Wade,

I am checking in per Hunter's request to see if everything is all set for Tuesday's class with Secretary Kerry. Do you need anything from him or the students (ss# etc.)? I am happy to help. Please let me know.

Thank you.
