Tuesday - March 4, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How can I spend time with my friends while not forgetting my family? NOTES FROM SALLY Reminder: No school this Friday (pre-planned). As I write on Monday – yet another snow day – I know that we will have days to make up. An announcement about those arrangements will be coming soon from the Head of School’s office. On Thursday the Middle School will have an all-school service activity for the morning. Grade levels in 5/6 and teams in 7/8 will have a speaker, have Meeting for Worship, and then be involved in service projects for the remainder of the morning. 7th and 8th grade students have been invited to two dances at nearby schools. This Friday (March 7th) there is a dance at St. Patrick’s in the gym from 7:00 – 9:30. The admission price is $5.00 and a canned food item. Appropriate casual dress is recommended. Next Friday (March 14th) there is one at Sheridan School in the gym from 7:00 – 9:00. Admission is $5.00, and students are invited to dress in red and blue. Bring student IDs to each event. Free event open to all this Saturday: a STEM fair giving students the opportunity to play with science. Check out this link. COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP Please join other parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends for our third Community Meeting for Worship in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, this coming Sunday, March 9, at 10:30am. Light refreshments will be served at the rise of Meeting. PA Announcements PARENTS ASSOCIATION ATHLETICS SURVEY DATA We are pleased to report that the fully tabulated results of the “Physical Education and Athletics at Sidwell Friends School” survey from this past November has been published on the Athletics Committee webpage in the parent portal. The webpage can be accessed via this link; then click on the survey (a PDF) on the right hand side of the page. These are the same results, in the same format, that have already been distributed to the Athletics Task Force and the Administration. We look forward to your continued support as we work together towards our shared goal of an optimized Sidwell Friends Athletics experience. The Parents Association Athletics Committee PARENTS OF LATINO STUDENTS SUMMER READING PROGRAM Please join the Parents Association's Parents of Latino Students (PLaS) for a program dedicated to developing age appropriate summer reading lists of U.S. Latino and International Latino writers. Come with your favorite book(s) and share with the group. The effort will be led by award-winning playwright and parent Miriam Gonzales. All parents from each division are welcome. Wednesday, March 5, 2014, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm, Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, refreshments/light fare will be served. For additional information please contact Co-clerks, Lisa Fuentes, Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan, Cristina Faz and Gonzalo Paz. FAMILY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY The Community Service Committee is sponsoring a family service opportunity at A Wider Circle in Silver Spring, Maryland. Please join us on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A Wider Circle provides basic need items to families transitioning out of shelters or simply living without life’s necessities. AWC furnishes the homes of more than 1,000 children and adults every single month, all free of charge. A Wider Circle is buzzing with activity on Saturdays, with families picking up their basic needs and donors dropping things off. Volunteers help sort through clothing and other donated items, organize and display household goods, and assist families shopping for clothing and items needed to furnish their new homes. To RSVP or with questions, please email Matt Fraidin. LINEN DRIVE - ONGOING UNTIL SPRING BREAK Got old bed linens, towels, comforters or blankets that you’re ready to toss? Please send them to Middle School ASAP with your nearest and dearest. Usable bed linens, blankets and comforters will find an immediate home at A Wider Circle. Shabby fleece blankets and towels will head to our furry friends at Washington Animal Rescue League. Our “Paws and Claws” Minimester group can use even badly tattered blankets in March to make toys for the cuties in cages. Collection bins are inside the M.S. lobby and in the 5th grade hallway. Contact Susanne Saunders or Lauren Lamb if you have questions. For more information about the Washington Animal Rescue League please see this link. TOILETRY COLLECTION During the upcoming March 6th Middle School Service Day, 7th and 8th graders will sort toiletries to benefit A Wider Circle. There is a toiletry collection bin in the Middle School Lobby; please donate travel size items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, lotion and deodorant. FOOD DRIVE SFS Food Drive Shopping List.docxOur winter food drive is underway. Please help us collect food to send to The Capital Area Food Bank with our Helping Hands Minimester! A suggested shopping list is attached. For more information on the Capital Area Food Bank please see this link. Read More Other News THE MS USED BOOK FAIR IS COMING! We need your help! QUAKER QUOTE George Fox was the father of Women's Rights insisting in opposition to all the world, even of some of his own disciples, on the right of women to preach, to hold separate business meetings, and to control their property without interference from their husbands, as exemplified in his own case, when he was called into court on matters connected with his wife’s property, her daughter's husband 'told the judges,' says George Fox 'that I had engaged never to meddle with my wife's estate received from Judge Fell, her first husband. The judges would hardly believe that any man would do so; whereupon he showed them the writing under my hand and seal, at which they wondered.' From this little seed sown by one man has grown the emancipation of the sex, until now we see women voting by hundreds of thousands in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Utah, and Idaho. It will be said I am writing a eulogy on George Fox and the Quakers. Not so. George Fox was not infallible, and the Quakers have their faults and plenty of them, but they have also their virtues."
