China’s influence over the Vietnamese in comparison to the effect of
Buddhism in the government

During the Han dynasty the Chinese practiced great authority over the
Vietnamese which affected their government and improved the stability of
the government for the future. Although after the fall of the Han dynasty
China no longer controlled the Vietnamese it still exerted greater
influence within the political structure of Vietnam rather than Buddhism.
This is especially evident in the rule of the Shi Han-Viet family in
Vietnam after the fall of the Han dynasty. throughout Vietnam than
Buddhism.

Although Buddhism was a strong and widespread belief held by many
Vietnamese it had less of an effect on the government than the Chinese.
Aspects of Chinese rule and government eventually became noticeable in
family life, education, and culture. First the Hans encouraged the
Vietnamese to speak Chinese and made it the official language of the
Vietnam. Over time the intermarried Chinese soldiers to Vietnamese which
developed a healthier relationship between Vietnamese and Chinese.

The Han Dynasty was organized primarily using Confucius beliefs and
concepts. Emperor Wu, the most influential Emperor during the Han dynasty
“recruited men trained in Confucious classics.” By recruiting Confucian
scholars he secured his government by ensuring that his “men” were
compliant and loyal.
One could argue that buddhism had a greater effect within Vietnam, but it
mostly effected the working, common people whereas the ruling class were
prodiminently buddhist based on their education. During the Han-Viet era
beliefs differed depending on social class, “Buddhism in particular
captured the imagination of common people by attaching itself to
indigineous spirit cults associated with the worship of trees and aquatic
powers. Ruling class people were predominantly Confucious by virtue of the
education.”
