The Editors: "There's a reason Ebola generates more terror than most viral illnesses: Doctors have no cure, and as many as 9 in 10 of its victims die. The only silver lining is that outbreaks have always been readily contained. Sadly, the new epidemic in Africa is another story. It has killed more than 650 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and shows no sign of abating. ... The governments of the three suffering countries can't be let off the hook."

Clive Crook: "Representative Paul Ryan's discussion paper on 'Expanding Opportunity in America' has much to admire. It puts attention where it belongs -- on poverty and upward mobility for those at the bottom of the income distribution. It argues for an expanded earned income tax credit, the best way to reduce poverty in work. And it correctly explains what's wrong with existing federal programs. When it comes to reforming those programs, though, Ryan's proposal leaves a lot of questions unanswered."

Albert R. Hunt: "The Democrats have little say in the agenda of the Republican-run House, and no dispassionate expert predicts the party will win control in the November elections. More likely is a Republican House majority for at least three or four more elections. That should be a prescription for chaos, despair and money woes for Democrats. Instead, the minority party in the House is unified and dominating the fundraising war with Republicans."
