The winner will, of course, receive a jersey of his or her very own to proudly wear wherever their bike takes them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bicycle Safety Refresher We know that our customers are the most dedicated cyclists there are, but sometimes even the most avid cyclist could use a refresher on basic tips to stay safe. With spring officially here and the weather warming up, we're guessing that you'll be spending quite a bit more time on your bike, which makes this an excellent time to remind yourself of some basic safety guidelines. We care about you - so please just humor us and give the below items a glance. * Wear a helmet. It should go without saying, but we feel compelled to say it anyway. When riding in traffic, a mirror can be useful as well. Our favorite is the EVT Safe Zone mirror (shown above). * Obey traffic signs and signals. Cyclists have the same rights as cars, but we also have to follow all the same rules of the road. Be responsible and give cyclists a good name. * Ride with traffic, not against it. You are not a salmon; don't act like one. * Use hand signals. Letting motorists and other cyclists know what you're planning to do is a big step to safe riding. * Get a head light. Especially at night, but it's not a bad idea during the daytime either. The best way to be safe, after all, is to be seen. * And a tail light. Ditto above. * Make eye contact with drivers before pulling into an intersection. Maybe that driver sees you, but perhaps he doesn't. Before you pull into an intersection, make eye contact just to be sure. * Think ahead. Try to predict what drivers and pedestrians might do next. Think how you could extricate yourself from sticky situations that might pop up. Look out ahead for uneven pavement, grating, and other road hazards. * Keep your bike in good repair. Riding safely is much easier when your tires have air, your chain is lubed, and your brakes are functioning properly. Always carry emergency tools for unexpected repairs along the way. Now, get out there and be safe! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ C-BEAR: Your Creaky Bottom Bracket Solution C-BEAR is based in Belgium, meaning that its founders and product engineers know a thing or two about wet, rainy weather and how such conditions can wreak havoc on bike components. As a result, their bottom brackets and ceramic bearings are designed to withstand the worst conditions, lasting three to four times longer than standard bearings. Possibly best of all, C-BEAR bottom brackets make any frame compatible with any crank, eliminating the need for shims and adapters. If you're tired of dealing with a creaky bottom bracket, C-BEAR's product line could be just the answer you've been seeking. C-BEAR bottom brackets have a two year warranty and are locally sourced exclusively by CycleLife in the Washington, DC region. We think they make a great upgrade for race season and our customers that have already made the switch seems to agree! Next time you're in the shop, ask us about C-BEAR and learn how their products can make a difference in your ride. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Steve's Five Essentials What are your five cycling essentials - the five things you couldn't (or wouldn't want to) do without? CycleLife Web Guy Steve recently shared with us his must-haves: 1. Cycling Cap. I almost always have a cycling cap on under my helmet; in the cold, it keeps my head warm; in the rain, it keeps water out of my eyes; in the sun, it keeps my eyes shaded; and when I need a haircut (for instance, right now), it keeps my hair out of the way. 2. Flat kit. I have found the perfect flat kit, using a Jandd saddle bag with two Specialized Turbo Tubes, two CO2 cartridges, a Genuine Innovations Air Chuck Elite inflator, a Park multitool, a Pedros tire lever, a patch kit, and a spare house key. 3. Honey Stinger Waffles (Vanilla or Honey). I can only eat so many gels and chews before I need something with some substance. The Stinger Waffles are like a honey sandwich (one of my favorite riding snacks) without the mess. 4. Specialized Phenom saddle. Once I found a saddle I liked, I put the same one on every one of my bikes. The Phenom is comfortable on long road rides and 100 mile mountain bike races, and gives all of my bikes a familiar feel. 5. Camera. I always try to ride with a camera, whether on my phone, a compact point and shoot, or my DSLR with a couple of lenses. Having photos of my adventures is a great way to share cycling with my friends, and reminds me of the good times my bikes and I have had. You can find all of Steve's essentials (except for the camera and the key to his house, of course) at CycleLife. If you're looking for a new cycling cap, saddle, or snacks, consider giving one of his favorites a try. You might find a new essential of your own! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Blog: Issue 37 of Rouleur Now Available The latest issue of Rouleur is now in stock at CycleLife. Rouleur is a different kind of cycling magazine, with beautiful imagery and high-quality storytelling. April's issue includes photo essays on the Arenberg Forest, one of the most exciting sections of Paris-Roubaix, and a factory tour of component manufacturer Miche, plus plenty of other cycling content. One issue not enough? We still have a few copies each of Issues 34 and 35.
