Lamar Alexander's aid on the Tennessee airwaves today to the tune of $257,000. Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, a 501(c)(4) group, is going up with an ad that praises the Republican as "a conservative leader working to secure our nation, strengthening our borders and making America less reliant on foreign energy" in a time of "international conflicts" and "a border crisis." It's running on broadcast and cable in the Nashville and Knoxville markets until the Aug. 7 primary, said the group, which previously spent money helping Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) defeat primary challengers. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83b0c596d3ef14f5d429b0f851fc3586e2f8aa7a46fe596194 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83b0c596d3ef14f5d429b0f851fc3586e2f8aa7a46fe596194 SCHATZ, IGE LEAD IN HAWAII: Sen. Brian Schatz and gubernatorial challenger David Ige each lead their Aug. 9 Democratic primary opponents by 10 points among likely voters, 49 percent to 39 percent, according to a poll conducted for League of Conservation voters last week by the automated pollster PPP. Gov. Neil Abercrombie lags by 13 points among women, 22 points among Asian voters and 26 points among Native Hawaiian voters while leading by 17 points among white voters, according to the crosstabs. Schatz enjoys a higher net favorability rating than Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (+38 compared to +16) and respondents said they trusted him more on environmental issues by an 11-point margin. LCV has endorsed Schatz, going up on the airwaves to support him late last week ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83f641fb411fbcde8e897cf84246a5a3cab343691a0a62c896 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83f641fb411fbcde8e897cf84246a5a3cab343691a0a62c896 ) but they don't have a horse in the gubernatorial race. That was the word in Joe Nocera's column in the Saturday edition of The New York Times, as part of a broader critical look at the Chamber's "right turn" in recent years. "At the most recent Committee of 100 meeting, Rob Engstrom, the chamber's national political director, told the group that the chamber planned to support Mary Landrieu, the Louisiana Democrat who is running for re-election to the Senate," Nocera reported. Asked for comment by POLITICO on Sunday, Chamber spokeswoman Blair Holmes emailed: "No decisions have been made in the LA Senate race." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83caeed670e74be7b3219b29edd6ef276989765404d6fd3801 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83caeed670e74be7b3219b29edd6ef276989765404d6fd3801 STAT DU JOUR: "[M]ore political ads from outside groups have already aired during the relatively slow summer period of the 2014 Senate contests - roughly 150,000 spots through mid-July - than ran throughout the entire 2010 Senate elections." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83b2f0e143f7ffa283e64615d96a10a3f9e1c3d4fcf359721d http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83b2f0e143f7ffa283e64615d96a10a3f9e1c3d4fcf359721d As Bill Clinton plans a Kentucky reprise, Ted Cruz heads to the Hamptons and Justin Amash says things are looking up, here's POLITICO's Morning Score: your daily guide to the 2014 midterms. POPPING THIS MORNING - "Scott Brown ad hits Shaheen on 'immigration crisis,'" by POLITICO's Maggie Haberman: "'Thanks to the pro-amnesty policies of President Obama and Sen. Shaheen, we have an immigration crisis on our hands,' Brown says. 'We respond with compassion, but it's time for us to secure the border once and for all.' The spot is part of a six-figure ad buy, according to a campaign official, who said Brown is the first candidate in a statewide race to focus on the current crisis. The ad is set to go up as new polls show the issue of border security, amid news coverage of the swell of children crossing the border from Central America to escape violence in their own countries, has risen in importance with voters." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd833bf485aeaf8d59aed443bf5cc638cfe8638d5d9f5129a62a http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd833bf485aeaf8d59aed443bf5cc638cfe8638d5d9f5129a62a "Amash confident with establishment MIA," by POLITICO's Anna Palmer in Byron Center, Mich.: "It wasn't supposed to be this way. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce went so far as to endorse Ellis. It was a stunning move, since the Big Business lobby rarely endorses a non-incumbent in a primary. But that's pretty much where the national support stopped. Amash said he wasn't surprised the establishment has largely steered clear of the race. 'They've been winning in places across the country because they've been dumping in millions of dollars to fend of fairly weak candidates,' Amash said. 'When you have a strong incumbent in the district who is well-liked in the district their game doesn't work anymore. I think they are being made aware of that.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83c2479bcdc225ba986dc59c19c239d04e98dcd7ba96bbc847 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83c2479bcdc225ba986dc59c19c239d04e98dcd7ba96bbc847 "Consultants rake in millions from GOP civil war," by POLITICO's Alexander Burns: "Thanks to an explosion of outsider Republicans running for office and the Supreme Court's loosening of campaign finance rules, the economics of political consulting have shifted. Suddenly, there's enough anti-incumbent work to sustain not just a skeleton crew of mercenary consultants, but a full-fledged cottage industry of ideological renegades - interlocking firms that pop up in one divisive primary after another, often working together or for different entities in the same race. That makes made it harder than ever for party leaders to stamp out internal challenges or deter strategists from taking on sitting officials by cutting them off from the elected officials and party committees on which so many firms depend. 'There is a small band of brothers who are very skilled campaign practitioners who take on these races,' Jon Lerner, the veteran conservative operative who has long advised the Club for Growth, explained in an email." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83e416a36f096b52c102cb48b1d52fd6842d7ee699af20c49f http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83e416a36f096b52c102cb48b1d52fd6842d7ee699af20c49f ** It's not possible to win campaigns this cycle without having a focus on Hispanics who are 50% of A18+ in 25 congressional districts. "Where do they think their electricity comes from," asks Tennant. "You and I know it's our hard-working West Virginia coal miners that power America. I've fought to protect our coal jobs right alongside Joe Manchin, and I'll stand up to leaders of both parties who threaten our way of life. I'll make sure President Obama gets the message." Tennant then pushes down on a large lever, and the lights go out at the White House. The ad concludes with about three seconds of nothing but crickets at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Tennant's camp is reportedly putting $120,000 behind her first TV ad ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83cfc8ffede3f1b9de8fd634b832b5e18c4d6ca698e1357b79 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=14b5d2de8db5dd83cfc8ffede3f1b9de8fd634b832b5e18c4d6ca698e1357b79 ), and it was produced by Mckenna Pihlaja.
