Robert -- To our elder generations, much is owed, and it is a debt we must honor. It is why I have fought for seniors for 17 years as an elected official. I am reminded of our obligation to seniors as we celebrate nearly fifty years of Medicare today. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law after it languished for nearly two decades as an unfulfilled initiative of President Harry S. Truman -- our nation’s first president to endorse a national health insurance program and, eventually, Medicare’s first enrollee. I believe we should be true to our word on our obligations to care for seniors. As your United States senator, I have sought to fight back plans to end Medicare as we know it and to keep choice in the hands of seniors. There is much work to do to ensure we can continue to care for our seniors but, today, we marvel at what we can achieve when we come together on behalf of our fellow Americans. Let's continue to achieve great things for our seniors and all Americans.
