Our 4th Annual Tee Off for Education is Monday, September 8, 2014 at The Muttontown Club in Long Island. The event begins at 11:00 AM and will conclude with a cocktail hour & fabulous dinner. The event will also include a Silent Auction, Raffle and some guest speakers! If you would like to become a Sponsor or participate as a golfer/foursome please contact Elizabeth at elizabeth@kenyaeducationfund.org! We have had a very exciting first year with auctioning off some incredible experiences and memorabilia on CharityBuzz! Just recently we closed on a Signed LA Galaxy Jersey by David Beckham as well as Lunch for 2 with Lauren Morelli, a writer on Orange Is the New Black! If you have a unique item (signed memorabilia, elite tickets, celebrity meet & greets, artwork, meetings with powerful executives & more!) that you would like to donate, please contact Elizabeth @ 212.792.6300 ext. 6427. ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE KENYA EDUCATION FUND It's always very hard for me to put into words my travel experiences to the great continent of Africa, but here is my best attempt at making it fit within a newsletter! I was lucky enough to make my first journey to Nairobi, Kenya in June. I was there from June 6 to June 23rd and let me tell you, it was nothing short of perfection! I was able to spend over two weeks with our staff in Nairobi which included attending a Mentor Workshop, hanging with KEF scholars, visiting several high schools and reading with kids at Red Rose Primary School. Of course I also made sure to do some things like shop at the Massai Market, feed a giraffe, eat Nyama Choma and try my best to learn some Swahili. The best part of my trip was being with the students of KEF. They are all so unique, polite, well behaved, funny and joyous. Their smiles light up the room and the commitment to their education is inspiring. I was able to be part of the Mentor Workshop in Nakuru, which included sessions on Goal Setting, Role Models, Career Readiness, Public Speaking, Attitude, Personal Hygiene, HIV Prevention and more. The workshop also had outdoor games and activities and tons of food! I also visited the LitWorld Hub at Red Rose Primary School in Kibera, Africa’s second largest slum. I was taken around the village and got to meet some of the locals who are doing amazing work. It was an eye-opening and humbling experience and I was honored to be part of such a special group of people. Along with the students and school visits, were the long drives to and from these places -- definitely the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen! I heard many stories on those rides and learned many lessons that I will always cherish. You should try it sometime…take a ride with a Kenyan and your mind will be OPENED! As I try and sum up my entire trip in just a few short paragraphs, I have to end with giving a major shout out to the KEF staff in Nairobi. They were so welcoming, energetic, generous and funny. I so enjoyed finally meeting them face to face and cannot wait to spend more time with them in the future! Until next time… #TeamKEF We're half way through the academic year in Kenya, but we're ALWAYS looking for new donors and sponsors. If you would like to become part of changing a Kenyan child's life, please let us know! We'd love to help you become a Sponsor or to contribute in any way. Please contact Brad or Elizabeth at info@kenyaeducationfund.org! Our Evening of Wine & Conversation on June 2, 2014 at the Kfoury Residence in Great Falls, Virginia was a hit! It was our first event of this kind and we can’t wait to do it again! We loved seeing all of our supporters and were happy to make many new friends. The evening consisted of a wine tasting which included four bottles of wine; a 2009 Closerie de Fourtet, a 2010 Close Marsalette, a 2012 Domaine Malandes Chalblis 1er Cru Fourchaume and a 2013 Vincent Delaporte Sancerre. As guests sipped their wine, they were treated to a lush silent auction and raffle. Executive Director, Bradley Broder, spoke of the many great things KEF is doing and one of those highlights were the recent acquisition of the Children of Kibera Foundation. Former Founder and now Member of Kenyan Parliament, Honorable Ken Okoth attended the event and spoke about the importance of education and continuing the CoKF legacy. He was followed by a KEF Alum, Shina Leboo, who has just completed her Sophomore year at Harvard studying Economics. A huge thank you to Jorge and Nancy Kfoury who provided their stunning house as the venue to the event. We’d like to also thank Elliott and Hugo, our wine Connoisseurs from Wide World of Wines, our Board Members and hardworking volunteers who helped make this event a success! We love updating you all with what are students are accomplishing because of the KEF and we have some awesome students right now doing some great things! SHINA LEBOO You know her, you love her...Shina Leboo! A KEF alum who is studying Economics at Harvard is working in the Admissions Office and giving tours to prospective students. She has begun blogging about her experiences and spending the summer in Boston! She is so excited about everything that her bubbly personality really shines in her posts.
