Whether you're a reporter working out in the field or perhaps simply in need of a handsome stationery essential, a good quality notebook is the small gift that goes a long way. That's the thinking behind the Accordion Notebook by Monocle Stationery, produced in collaboration with German paper specialists Brandbook. We asked Monocle's senior designer, Yoshitsugu Takagi, how to create a fresh page.

What features did you think were vital to include when designing the Monocle Accordian Notebook?

It's slightly narrower than A5, which we consider to be an easy size when on-the-go. The nature of our work at Monocle shares many similarities with our readers, we're often packing small for flights, exchanging business cards or notes to get a good idea going. So we thought it would be great to have a combination notebook with pockets included on it too. Having experimented with over 20 prototypes, the hand-sized Accordian style was the best result.

Why is Brandbook in Germany the best stationery partner for Monocle?

We have a long relationship with Brandbook, having worked with them since 2008.

They are really responsive to detailed requests regarding important elements such as paper, materials and print specifications. When this is combined with their unmatched manufacturing skills, it's a great example of Germany's history and care when it comes to guaranteeing high production values.

What kind of materials are used in the notebook?

We use linen to bind our stationery series, which comes in grey and olive, embossed with the Monocle logo. The pages are beautiful quality 90g Munken paper stock and it even comes with a handy rubber band to stop anything flying away.
