In our society furniture has become as disposable as, well, any article of relatively little monetary value. Mattresses can now be ordered and delivered in boxes, cars can be bought online and delivered or claimed at the car kiosk tower. If a chair breaks, we may simply buy a new one. Today's feast is not about furniture but about a chair a symbol of authority, of presence, of power. It was as the king sat on his chair a throne that he rendered decisions and issued decrees and judgments. So St. Peter yes, the one who said to Jesus "I'll never leave you," and then shortly thereafter said, "I do not know the man." Peter's chair is a teaching chair, and his words and the words of those who have succeeded him in occupying his chair deserve no, are required to be heard. "Tend the flock of God in your midst, overseeing not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it...Do not lord it over those assigned to you but be examples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:1-4)
