As the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee and an attorney, I've spent my eight years in the legislature keeping our judicial process in Iowa lawful, fair, and impartial. Even conservative groups like the US Chamber of Commerce consistently rank the Iowa Court system top in the country in terms of expertise, efficiency and objectivity.

Why then would Republicans at the Capitol be trying to change a system that not only isn't broken but is operating in a manner that is efficient and fair?

Republicans say they want to give Iowans a voice on the commissions that select judges, but their new bill would actually give everyday Iowans less say in picking our judges. The GOP plan will give more power to politicians at the State Capitol and their special interest friends.

Make no mistake, this is a power grab by Republican politicians who want complete control of state government, including the judicial branch. If Iowa goes down this path, there's no turning back. Our judicial process will move from fair and local to nothing but judicial nominating commissions full of partisan political appointees.

This is beyond party labels. If Republicans don't hear from Iowans like you, this decision will affect our children and the state of Iowa for decades to come.
