Hunter,

As we come to the end of this year’s Black History Month, I hope you were able to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of African Americans throughout the history of our nation.

This year, I was especially mindful of the challenges that abolitionists and civil rights activists had to overcome -- here in the First State and beyond.

I thought of African American abolitionists like Abraham Shadd and Samuel Burris who played an integral role in helping those escaping slavery through the Underground Railroad.

And I am always reminded of and inspired by my great-great-grandfather who, although he could not write, was able to exercise his right to vote during the Reconstruction Era.

Having his example in mind made hosting last night's dinner with all of the African American elected officials in Delaware that much more special -- it was an incredible reminder of how far we have come and the progress that has been made:

Of course, Black folks aren’t Americans for just one month out of the year. So, Hunter, our celebration of those incredible achievements and recognition of our stubborn obstacles to full equality in America shouldn’t end when March begins, either.

After all, the time is always right to do what’s right. And we still have so far to go in the great unfinished work of ensuring that the content of our character -- not the color of our skin -- is the true measure of every American.

It is the greatest honor of my life to take up that unfinished work, and I thank you for everything you’re doing to support that great task of forming a more perfect union together.
