The gospel message contained in Luke's gospel and which is proclaimed at Mass today is overpowering. The words form the conclusion to the text of Luke commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Plain since the setting for the teaching is a gathering of a multitude on a level stretch of land. The message is blunt and straightforward. Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you. And more. How do we, then, take this message to heart and mind and then translate it into practical moments, daily patterns, social policies and local and national laws? "Rather, love you enemies and do good to them... Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." (Luke 6:27-36)
