The Scriptures which Jesus would have known were those sacred texts which, of course, existed prior to his lifetime. In today's Mass lengthy reference is made in the Book of Sirach to the value and virtues of friendship. Jesus would have valued those teachings "A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter . . . a faithful friend is beyond price." (Sirach 6:14-15) - and the spirit of those texts would have permeated his own thoughts and actions. Hence, Jesus told the disciples gathered at the last supper and he would remind us that "I [Jesus] shall no longer call you servants; I call you friends because I have made known to you everything I have learned from my Father."
