The weekday gospels for this, the seventh week in ordered time, are beginning to set the tone for the forthcoming season of Lent. We listen in segments to the ninth chapter of Mark's gospel. Today we meet a boy who from childhood has been possessed by a deaf and mute spirit. This is not the first time we have met someone beset by a similar situation. Jesus heals the young man, but the conversation which takes place between Jesus and the family revolves around faith. As Lent approaches we have to ask ourselves do we believe that Jesus can free us from the deaf and mute spirits within us - and within our society? "This kind can only come out through prayer."
