Cardiologists would most likely suggest that we limit our use of salt in our diet or eliminate it completely. Yet we desire it not just for the benefits salt provides but for the accent it offers in the taste of our foods. In the ancient world salt was a form of payment for services rendered (the word 'salary' comes from the Latin word sal). Jesus tells us that we must have salt within us. He is not attempting to make a medical statement but rather to offer a piece of advice regarding our spirits. Metaphorically, salt manifests the spirit and spunk within us which helps us temper ourselves and assess our relationships with others. "Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another."
