2018 Working Group Update

Hi everyone. As C_TEC begins to wrap up 2017, I wanted to provide a few updates regarding our work for next year.

2017 has been a significant year of growth and refinement for C_TEC. As a result, I've made the decision to limit participation in our working groups heading into 2018. As of January 2018, C_TEC working group calls and meetings will only be open to Chamber members.

While I appreciate the growing external interest in our work, we need to be respectful of our members who are financially supporting the efforts of C_TEC. On November 8th, Tim presented to the Chamber's Executive Committee meeting on C_TEC and our work on AV legislation.

On November 9th, Tim published an op-ed (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/3fu5qp) in the Hill about technology's ability to empower small businesses.

On November 9th, the St. Louis Post Dispatch (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/j8u5qp), Mashable (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/z0v5qp), Adweek (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/ftw5qp), Inc (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/vlx5qp)., Business Journals (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/bey5qp), and WYFF (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/r6y5qp) reported that Facebook is starting a 30 city tour to help small businesses and entrepreneurs improve their digital presence. This is a result of research C_TEC co-sponsored with Facebook which showed that one out of three small and medium sized businesses have built their companies using Facebook.

On November 14th, C_TEC submitted comments (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/7yz5qp) to NHTSA on "Automated Driving Systems: A Vision for Safety," NHTSA's voluntary guidance for autonomous vehicles. The comments were in support of the flexible and rational approach NHTSA has adopted which encourages innovation and investment in AVs.

On November 15th, C_TEC held an AV Working Group conference call and received a legislative update on Senate AV activity from Cheri Pascoe, Professional Staff Member and Investigator for Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and Sydney Paul, Legislative Counsel for Senator Gary Peters.

On November 15th, Julie traveled to San Francisco to meet with companies as part of our ongoing efforts to expand our presence in the valley.

On November 28th, C_TEC, with the Chamber's International Affairs Division and the Chamber's Foundation, released a white paper: The Opportunity Project - A New Social Contract for a Changing World (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/nr05qp). The Opportunity Project collaborative white paper calls on businesses, workers, and the government to embrace the new economy, analyze the challenges we face, and identify the roles and the solutions that will lead to the path forward towards managing the opportunities and risks that come with change and help us thrive.

On November 28th, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation released their AV report, 'American Vision for Safer Transportation Through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies Act' (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/3j15qp). On November 29th, Tim published an op-ed (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/jc25qp) in the Washington Examiner about new polling on ride sharing services from Morning Consult. The polling found strong support from the public for ride sharing services and their ability to improve traffic congestion, encourage carpooling, and reduce emissions.

On November 30th, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released an AV report, 'Automated Vehicles: Comprehensive Plan Could Help DOT Address Challenges' (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3br8bd/r2f0ql/z425qp). #WHATSNEXT

On December 15th, C_TEC will host a high level start up delegation from India. The delegation will include stakeholders from industry, incubators, venture capital, universities, start-ups and others. The focus will be to better understand the possibility of strengthening the collaboration between India and the US in the arena of start-ups and innovation.
