I love that they covered Delaney and Bonnie’s “Comin Home” in the clip played yesterday. I love that music so deeply. The late Jerry Wexler once said to me in his distinctive Brooklynese, “Kid, for me it’s all about jazz and southern rock.” Talking to Jerry was like talking to Babe Ruth. After all, he did work with Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Wilson Pickett, Dire Straits, Dusty Springfield, Delaney and Bonnie, and Bob Dylan, to name a few. And I’m not far from Jerry when it comes to my devotion to southern rock and jazz. Delaney and Bonnie embodied quintessential southern rock. You won’t find them enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they aren’t household names. But, they were legendary musicians in the late 1960s-early 1970s—they were especially legendary to the actual rock and roll royalty. Rock stars like Eric Clapton and George Harrison looked up to Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett and were in awe of their music. Clapton left Blind Faith to join Delaney and Bonnie. Delaney Bramlett was born in 1939 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, and incorporated the influences of Delta bluesman such as Robert Johnson into his music. In turn, Clapton has said, “Delaney taught me everything I know about singing.” To Clapton and George Harrison, Delaney was the guy who was the big star. Here, Clapton and Harrison were more than content to just be part of the band. This version of Delaney and Bonnie included Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, and Bobby Whitlock, who would later join Clapton to form Derek and the Dominoes. It also included the late Bobby Keys, who would play for decades with the Rolling Stones, and the late Billy Preston, who played with the Beatles in addition to his own celebrated solo career.
