Join artist Julianne Swartz (http://madmuseum.org/events/julianne-swartz%E2%80%99s-sine-body-vocalist-ali-dineen) on Sunday, December 10 at 4 pm, when she’ll be accompanied by vocalist Ali Dineen (http://madmuseum.org/events/julianne-swartz%E2%80%99s-sine-body-vocalist-ali-dineen) for a 45-minute performance activating Sine Body, Swartz’s installation of sound-generating ceramic and glass vessels in Sonic Arcade: Shaping Space with Sound (http://www.madmuseum.org/sonic-arcade-shaping-space-with-sound) . Each vessel in Sine Body produces a specific sound, which resonates optimally in that particular body. To generate the sounds, Swartz uses an electronic feedback process that reads the air mass in each vessel in order to locate, generate, and amplify pure frequencies.

During Studio Sundays, kids and adults alike are invited to work with artists on the creation of their own artworks. This week’s iteration welcomes kids and their families for a reading of Extra Yarn, written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen.

From 10 am to noon on the sixth floor, join artist Leslie Diuguid (http://madmuseum.org/events/studio-sunday-79) for a screenprinting workshop organized in conjunction with the exhibition AMPL!FY: (http://www.madmuseum.org/exhibition/amplfy) Advancing the Front Lines of Social Justice (http://www.madmuseum.org/exhibition/amplfy) , currently on view in The Project Space. Using an array of colorful inks, guests will be invited to compose and print their own poster designs inspired by the historical iconography of civil rights and social justice activism.

A trio of dancers will perform Lift is an original dance piece honoring the work being done by ten New York City–based social justice organizations.

On Thursday, December 7, at 7 pm, At Play (http://www.madmuseum.org/series/play-performing-artist-residence-series) artist-in-residence Steven Reker (http://www.madmuseum.org/learn/steven-reker) and musician Matt Evans (http://madmuseum.org/events/amp-dance-one) will perform using an array of amps collected from friends and collaborators; they will simultaneously compose an experimental soundscape while arranging, and rearranging, the amps in a number of sculptural formations.

During its gala, MAD announced the establishment of the Burke Prize, a new annual award that reinforces MAD’s commitment to celebrating the next generation of artists working in and advancing the disciplines that shaped the American studio craft movement. An unrestricted $50,000 award and named for Marian and Russell Burke, two passionate collectors of craft and longtime supporters of MAD, the Burke Prize will be determined by an annual jury of professionals in the fields of art, craft, and design following an open application process. Our collection of holiday ornaments are now on display in the Museum lobby! In 1977, Second Lady and champion of craft, Joan “Joan of Art” Mondale approached Paul J. Smith, then Director of MAD (formerly known as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts), and asked him to curate a selection of handmade ornaments for the holiday tree in the vice presidential residence. Smith put out an open call, which resulted in a collection of over 150 ornaments by more than forty artists and craftspeople from across the country, many of whom are part of MAD’s permanent collection—among them Marian Clayden, Stanley Lechtzin, Ed Rossbach, Mary Ann Scherr, Katherine Westphal, and Claire Zeisler. A grouping that celebrates creativity, imagination, and play in American craft, the ornaments were displayed in the Museum in 1977 before they went off to Washington, DC, where they decorated the Mondales’ tree later that year and the following. The ornaments now form part of MAD’s Study Collection and are
on display as part of the Museum’s 60th Anniversary.

On November 16, The Store at MAD premiered RE:FINE Holiday 2017 (http://madmuseum.org/events/refine-holiday-2017) , previously known as Redefining Fine Jewelry, with a lively opening cocktail party and shopping event. The opening of RE:FINE marked The Store’s third seasonal foray into fine jewelry for sale, and brought together thirty-two international artists and designers. RE:FINE spotlights forward-thinking jewelry artists, each with a consummate craft and singular creative vision, who have applied innovative technique to the highest-quality precious metals and nontraditional gemstones to create timeless and inspired pieces.

MAD is excited to announce the January opening of Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) , an exhibition of large-scale sculpture, and mixed-media collage and assemblage on wood panels that reimagine safe destinations for the black American traveler during the mid-twentieth century. The body of work was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, an annual guidebook for black American road-trippers published by New York mailman Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1966, during the Jim Crow era in America. Adams is a New York–based, multidisciplinary artist working in performance, video, sound, textile- and paper-based collage, and multimedia sculpture. His practice is rooted in deconstructivist philosophies such as the fragmentation and manipulation of structure and surface, and the marriage of complex and improbable forms.
