Saudi Arabia charged Monday that Iran had committed “a blatant act of military aggression” by providing its Yemeni allies with a missile fired at the Saudi capital over the weekend, raising the threat of a direct military clash between the two regional heavyweights, as the

Very few things make me happier than spirited music. Certainly, that includes spiritual music. I loved going to undergrad at Tulane in New Orleans because every night of the week, someone, somewhere was performing spirited live music infused with soul. And while most of the places I witnessed great music being made weren’t actually churches or synagogues (although sometimes they were), the musicians turned juke joints and other venues into houses of worship. Indeed, it was comforting during those years to have such a blanket of faith and soul wrapped tightly around me in the form of a joyful noise.

That’s why I’m so moved by Bob Dylan’s latest Bootleg Series release, “Trouble No More — The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981” which became available late last week.

Ever since I watched Dylan perform “Gotta Serve Somebody” on Saturday Night Live in 1979 (I watched it with my grandmother), I have been mesmerized by Dylan’s born-again music.

It’s the conviction that Dylan wrote and sang with during this period (1979-1981) that has captured me. And then there’s the soulful band Dylan put together to tour with—legendary southerners like Spooner Oldham on organ, Little Feat’s Fred Tackett on guitar and Jim Keltner on drums along with a rotation of backup gospel singers. The best selections from “Trouble No More” are the simmering live takes, many of which are previously unreleased.

The new/old music on ‘Trouble No More” sounds better than ever to me. It comes at a time when we can all use a smile, when we can all benefit from faith—after all, don’t we always need faith and smiles in abundance?
