Spencer, Iowa boasts small town living at its best.

We have great schools, 10-minute drives to anywhere, a fantastic regional hospital, retail and services for the area, and people with a can-do spirit for making the town sparkle and thrive.

Moving here eight years ago, I was amazed to see the circle of life up close -- where kids and grandkids go to the same schools as their parents and grandparents. They play in the same parks, grow up in the same neighborhoods, and enjoy many of the same experiences as kids in a small town.

However, many of our young people move away for better opportunities in larger communities. Which is why my husband and I decided to invest in bringing a place here that would be interesting to millennials and multi-generational creatives, a place they could call their own.

So we started The Bear Coffeehouse and Wine Bar, a local cafe and community gathering spot.

While running a small business is not easy, it's rewarding beyond imagination -- especially as we’ve seen the love and appreciation people have for The Bear grow over the years. We like to say the first time you visit you’re our guest, the second time you’re our friend. Our 'bearistas' as we call them, are our family.

It's hard to imagine our community without The Bear and, hopefully, it makes living here a little more fun and interesting. So today, on Small Business Saturday, my husband and I want to express our appreciation for the incredible support this community gives to our little spot.

And I hope you’ll show your local businesses a little of the same love and support we get here at The Bear this Small Business Saturday -- add your name in support of all the small businesses in your community.
