In the spring of 1979, Bob Dylan heard the Dire Straits song, “Sultans of Swing,” and subsequently asked Mark Knopfler to play on his next album. That record would be “Slow Train Coming” and would mark Dylan’s new beginning with evangelical music—the music featured so brilliantly on the new Dylan Bootleg collection “Trouble No More.”

Of course Knopfler and Dire Straits would go on to record one of the best-selling albums of all time, 1984’s “Brothers in Arms.” That record actually launched the Compact Disc era, and featured the iconic “Money for Nothing” track with its ubiquitous “I want my MTV” refrain sung by Sting.

But prior to “Brothers in Arms,” Dire Straits ruled FM radio in 1980 with their unique sound and “Sultans of Swing.” I can still recall hearing Dire Straits and “Sultans” the first couple of times. It didn’t sound like anything I’d ever heard. It still sounds completely singular to me. I’ve been listening to Dire Straits the past couple of days and it still sounds so fresh—like this version of “Sultans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pa9x9fZBtY&feature=youtu.be&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=7e2c80c87d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_11_13&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-7e2c80c87d-145367789) ” from their live double album “Alchemy Live” recorded at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in July of 1983.
