American music, its roots and heritage runs so deep—to me these roots are everything. The foundation of rock and roll comes from a mixture of so many forms of American music. Of course, the blues of the American South is a critical piece of that DNA. Alan Lomax, the noted ethnomusicologist traveled many miles across this great country recording thousands of songs and interviews for the Archive of the American Folk Song at the US Library of Congress. Without his work we might not have ever been able to fully understand how American music developed, nor would we have been exposed to some of the world’s greatest and most original artists. Take the late R.L. Burnside who hailed from the hill country of North Mississippi. His guitar playing was otherworldly. I was privileged to hang out with Mr. Burnside in the late 1990s when he became an icon of the modern garage rock scene and released blues music that sounded like nothing that had come before it. I can still hear him saying to me, “Boy, go get me a beer, a Budweiser…” Fetching Mr. Burnside a Bud was one of the great honors I’ve had in my life. When Lomax first recorded R.L. in 1978, he captured something truly historic. It’s a smile to share it now (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_DOnKJ232M) . ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
