On Wednesday former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray (D) was officially
appointed to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after being
initially nominated in July.

President Obama led a press conference in Columbus, Ohio where he announced
he had appointed Cordray via a recess appointment over the strong objections
of Senate Republicans.

The President noted that he felt forced to use the recess appointment after
“a minority in the Senate [put] party ideology ahead of people they were
elected to serve.”

In his press conference Wednesday President Obama reinforced that the
country could not wait for congress to act, especially when it “hurts our
economy and puts people at risk.”

General Cordray has served as the agency’s top enforcement officer since its
inception. Cordray was elected Ohio’s Attorney General in 2008 in a special
election and held the position until 2010. During his tenure Cordray became
a leader in defending consumers, a quality he now brings to his new post
atop the CFPB.

[13]Arkansas Attorney General Rejects Abortion Amendment

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel today rejected a proposed constitutional
amendment that would ban some abortions in Arkansas. McDaniel cited
ambiguities in the measure submitted by Personhood Arkansas and said the
text was misleading as to the relationship between the measure and federal
law.

Oregon Attorney General

[16]VA Attorney General Says He Has No Conflict in Defending Ballot Law
Against Perry Lawsuit

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says his criticism of the state’s
ballot access law doesn’t mean he can’t defend it in court. Cuccinelli’s
office represents the state in a lawsuit filed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who
failed to obtain the needed signatures to get on Virginia’s Republican
presidential primary ballot. Newt Gingrich also failed to get the required
10,000 signatures.

[17]Montana Supreme Court Restores 100-Year-Old State Ban on Corporate
Political Money

The Montana Supreme Court restored the state’s century-old ban on direct
spending by corporations on political candidates or committees in a ruling
Friday that interest groups say bucks a high profile U.S. Supreme Court
decision granting political speech rights to corporations. The decision
grants a big win to Attorney General Steve Bullock, who personally
represented the state in defending its ban that came under fire after the
“Citizens United” decision last year from the U.S. Supreme court.
