Upper School students began the morning meeting with various alumni who spoke about their professional lives and the work they are doing in the world. Our annual Let Your Life Speak program, sponsored by our Alumni Association, gave our students the chance to learn about the various career paths our alumni have taken. We then welcomed Lower and Middle School students, faculty, and staff, and gathered together for an All-School Meeting for Worship, followed by choral performances from students of all three divisions. Mid-day activities included an outdoor picnic, moon bounces, pick-up basketball, arts & crafts, and other activities. We closed the day with a phenomenal Arts Guild, where students performed a range of musical pieces, including original music, a poetry recitation, and solo and group performances. On Monday, we had a special Chess Club presentation at Collection. Wearing a blindfold and therefore working solely from memory, one of the Chess Club members challenged Mr. Woods to a match. Projected onto the walls of the Meeting Room, the match was riveting to watch. Our Chess Club had an incredible year, winning two tournaments. We sent 10 students to the National Championships this year and brought home the championship award for the “Unrated” section for chess players who had never competed in a tournament. This Saturday, the Chess team competes in the DCSAA Chess Championship. If you have a child interested in the Chess Club, please encourage them to speak with the club advisor, Mr. Markey. The AP Exams will take place May 2-13. Students taking afternoon AP exams are excused from morning classes. Students who take morning AP exams are asked to attend afternoon classes. Junior classes are canceled on May 4 and May 6 for the English and US History exams, respectively. Juniors who sit for these exams will be excused after the exams end, and juniors who are not taking these AP exams are excused from school on these days. Below is a link to the Collegeboard website with a detailed schedule of the AP Exams. Questions should be directed to Cory Zimmerman at zimmermanc@sidwell.edu. http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/exam/calendar/index.html. STUDENT PHOTO AND INTERVIEW Dear Parents, You're probably wondering why two obscure members of Sidwell's Class of 2016 are reaching out to you, so here is our best explanation: When students reach their senior year of high school at Sidwell Friends, we are given the opportunity to dedicate the last month of our time here to our own proposed project. For our senior project, we have chosen to conduct photographic interviews of the students of the SFS Lower, Middle, and Upper schools. The questions in the interview will be about your student’s aspirations, dreams, and goals. We will conduct these interviews with students of each grade who volunteer, and create a book with a compilation of their portrait and snippets of their interviews that we think best encapsulates their essence. Our goal is to express how aspirations vary throughout the Sidwell Friends community and throughout students of all ages. We will take these photos around campus at a time that is convenient to the students. If this sounds like something your child would like to participate in, please let us know! You can reach us at etobin16@sidwell.edu or llewin16@sidwell.edu. We will be happy to send the edited final portraits of your child to you if you would like. (Who wouldn’t want a free semi-professional portrait of their pride and joy?!) We will be conducting the interviews throughout the month of May, and the final book will be available in the high school for many years to come. We hope it will be a great way to look back on the person your child used to be, and see how they have grown. We will send out a permission slip to all those who express interest, so please let us know! We will need to coordinate a time with their teachers and advisors, so please get back to us by Sunday, April 24. Thank you! Laura Lewin and Eliza Tobin Class of 2016 HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS Every year, Sidwell Friends hosts two exchange students from China and one exchange student from Ramallah Friends School. If you are interested in hosting one of our exchange students next year, please contact Upper School Principal Mamadou Guèye. SIDWELL SUMMER STUDIES: NEW COURSE OFFERING Sidwell Summer Studies is excited to offer a new course this summer, Molecular Neuroscience Research. This credit-bearing course, taught by Melanie Fields and Sonal Schropfer, will allow students to conduct scientific investigations while mastering concepts from molecular biology and neuroscience. Other Summer Studies courses offered include History of the United States, English Review, Middle School Review, ACT and SAT Prep, College Application Essay Writing, and a range of math courses (special permission needed for summer acceleration in math). The summer session runs from June 20-July 29. For more information about these courses, please contact Tom Donley at donleyt@sidwell.edu. KID POWER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The Leadership Academy is a summer program for DC elementary and middle school students that focuses on math, language arts, civics, health and nutrition, and traditional camp enrichment activities. It's a great experience for students and our high school volunteers. Volunteers from SFS serve in a support staff roll during the summer, assisting with small groups of students during academic lessons and camp activities. The Summer Leadership Academy runs from July 5-29, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day. The camp will be held at Jefferson Academy, located at 801 7th Street SW. Those interested in volunteering with Kid Power this summer should e-mail Anna Davis at annad@kidpowerdc.org with contact information and availability during our summer dates. If doing this to complete the graduation requirement, students will need to complete the community engagement contract and submit to Shoshanna Sumka prior to beginning the work. Other NEWS FROM THE NURSE DC_School_Immunization_Flyer_201617.pdfThis is just a friendly reminder as we begin to prepare for the 2016/17 school year. Physical Examinations and Immunizations Required for Attendance All health-related forms must be submitted online via Magnus Health. No paper health forms will be accepted at the School. Annual Physical Exams: All students are required to have an annual physical exam during the 12-month period immediately preceding the first day of the school year. You will receive an automated e-mail reminder directly from Magnus Health six weeks prior to the expiration of the physical examination. A DC Universal Health Certificate must be completed and signed by a physician or advanced practice nurse and submitted to the School via Magnus Health. (Sign into the Parent Portal and click on the link Update Student Health Information). Parents will be given both oral and written notice if they fail to provide the required form. If after 30 days it has not been submitted, public health authorities will be notified. In addition to submission of the DC Universal Health Certificate as described above (12 months prior to first day of school), in order to participate in all School and physical activities, students must update the Vital Health Record (by July 1 within the calendar year), and the Consent to Treat Form (by July 1 within the current calendar year). If you find that you will not be able to furnish the School with an updated Health Certificate by the expiration date of the last physical examination, you may have the health care practitioner write a note indicating that your child “is cleared to participate in physical and other school-related activities until the next physical exam scheduled on . . . .” This note will suffice until that scheduled physical exam is completed, and should be submitted via Magnus Health. Immunizations: In accordance with DC law, all students must submit documentation that they have been vaccinated against specific illnesses before the school year begins. Tdap, meningitis, and HPV immunizations are required by the DC Department of Health for students 11 years and older entering 6th through 12th grades. No student will be allowed to attend school without a Certificate of Immunization unless the student has been exempted in accordance with the law. In order for a student to be exempted from providing certification of immunization, parents must submit a completed religious or medical exemption form on an annual basis to Magnus Health via the parent portal on the SFS website. QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS ?"Let your lives preach, let your light shine, that your works may be seen . . . ." ---George Fox, Epistle 200 "Be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come; that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people, and to them; then you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone . . . ." ---George Fox, 1656 George Fox? joined with other independent thinkers in the mid 1600s to found the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers as they soon came to be known. Fox and his compatriots were believers in the idea that truth can be found---and must be sought---at every moment. It is derived from the grace within each of us and not from some external source. Fox believed that this light among us all both unites us and compels us to act---to "preach"--- the truth we find in our own hearts and minds. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu. ?
