is an odd question coming from Mitt Romney, who is about as exciting as
the management consultant he once was. Yet it was one of the more
interesting arguments in his speech last night accepting the Republican

form a regional quartet to end the conflict doesn't include the U.S.,
“the State Department should relax. . . . By involving all the
important regional players, Mursi's plan addresses the core threat that
the 17-month-old Syria conflict poses to U.S. interests: a widening
confrontation between Shiites and Sunnis across the Middle East.”

AMITY SHLAES: The U.S. should end the homeowners’ tax break. “The chief
appeal of repeal is the reduction of price distortion. You are more
likely to lose a house if you paid too much, because its true value was
muddied by politics. You are more likely to keep a house whose price at
the time of purchase was transparent and derived from the relative

STEPHEN CARTER: As professional football season kicks off next week,
the negligence lawsuit filed by former players against the NFL
threatens to turn fans against the league. “Even if it costs a few tens
of millions to make the lawsuit go away, it would seem to be a price

Mitt Romney's speech "won’t fundamentally change the contours of his
campaign, which now depends on compensating for his deficits with women
and Hispanics by maximizing the white working-class male vote. This
means emitting a series of 'dog whistles' -- carefully coded messages
heard only by anxious white voters inclined to think President Barack
Obama is too easy on minorities." [Read more]
NAOMI SCHAEFER RILEY: Prospective students (and their parents) who
visit college campuses during summer are wasting their time. “Colleges
over the summer are just a bunch of buildings, some lovely landscaping
and a few peppy student ambassadors -- walking backward, of course.”
