Notes from Sally

This week’s assembly: Marc Tyler Nobleman, author of books about the creators of Batman and Superman. This assembly will begin early – at 2:30 – in the theater on Friday.

The location for the laptop meeting scheduled for this Wednesday evening has changed from the Drama Studio to the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. The meeting begins at 7:30 and offers a chance for parents whose children have had laptops before to ask questions and hear about changes in the program.

All 7th and 8th graders will be out on service trips this Thursday. You should have received a permission slip and information about the day; please contact your child’s advisor with any questions.

If there are parents who are interested in working with 5th and 6th graders to get our rooftop garden boxes planted, I would love to hear from you! This would take place on Wednesday afternoons from 2:45 – 3:30.

Are you having trouble figuring out how to report that your child is sick? From the bottom of the front page of the SFS website, click “contact us.” You will find a link to report attendance items for all three divisions. This new link was created in response to a parent suggestion – we welcome your ideas!

Directories have arrived and are going home with the youngest child in the family. Also remember that the directory is available on line. Please be sure to read the privacy statement on the first page of the directory. SFS phone numbers and email addresses are to be used only for school business.

7th and 8th graders will begin to play interscholastic team contests next week. Some reminders about the schedule when that occurs:

Game schedules are posted on the Athletics section of the Sidwell Friends School website. Any changes to the schedule because of weather or other circumstances will be posted on the website as soon as decisions are made. This information is also on the hotline, which can be reached at 202-537-8176, #1. Parents are encouraged to attend games, both at home and away!

Picking up students after “away” games: If parents attend games away from campus, they may take their own child directly home after the game, but please check out with the coach so that s/he knows that the student has left. If a student is to ride home with a parent other than his or her own, that student must bring in a note from their parents before they leave campus giving permission for the child to go home with the other parent.

Transportation back to SFS will always be provided after away games. The Athletic Department will do its best to provide an approximate time for pick up. This time is, of course, subject to change due to the circumstances of the game, traffic, weather, etc. Usually away games start at 2:45 and end at 4:00. Travel back to school is usually about 45 minutes, so normal time to return after collecting equipment and boarding the bus is 4:45.

Students will be dropped off from the bus or van at the garage, and that is where parents should plan to meet them. That is also the meeting place after home games. If students need to leave backpacks, books, or clothes here at school, they have the following options:

1. Lock belongings in their Middle School locker. The door near the office is unlocked until 6:00 PM.

2. Leave belongings in their advisor’s room. If the advisor has left by the time students return, there is usually someone who can open the door. Students can stop by the office, ask a teacher, or call a Security Officer.

3. Leave their belongings in their gym locker.

In the rare instance that a team returns after 6:00, the red phone at the Security Office may be used to radio an officer who can unlock the building and a classroom if necessary.

Athletic Team Spirit Days and “Secret Psyche:” Occasionally your child will leave for school wearing what one might consider an unusual get-up: pajamas, mismatching clothes, etc. It’s probably for Team Spirit, an effort to promote enthusiasm and camaraderie among team members. The teams decide on their spirit displays, but the team captain must check with Jennifer or Sally in advance to clear the plans.

The Athletic Department discourages the practice of “Secret Psyche,” which means buying something for a team member to be given secretly the day of the game.

Back to School Night is coming up on October 4th. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please email Julia Porter (porter@sidwell.edu) or call the Middle School office to sign up for child care. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 8:15 p.m. for 5/6 and around 8:45 p.m. for 7/8.

Parents are welcome in Middle School at any time! However, we do ask that if you need to speak with a teacher about your son or daughter that you make an appointment rather than just dropping in to be sure that we know you are coming. Remember – all teachers may be reached by email with the last name, first initial @sidwell.edu. A list of teachers, phone extensions, and emails is in the Student Directory.

Please remember the party guidelines from the Parent/Student Handbook: It is suggested that parties given by students include either all or not more than half of any given group: the homeroom, the advisory, or the grade level. Remembering these guidelines will help all of our students.

Don’t forget the pink and purple forms that were sent in the mail in August. Please send those back if you have not already done so.

PA Arts Committee US Library Board Room

The PA Arts Committee needs your creativity, assistance or just attendance to support our mission this year. The theme of the Arts Committee is year is More than Artrageous. For those who don’t know, Artrageous is a popular All School Arts Festival event where the school community comes together. While Artrageous has become a flagship event of the Arts Committee, this is not the only thing we do. If you have ideas please bring them and if you have any technical skills or performance skills, please come along. Whatever your level of interest we would like to welcome you. Just one suggestion--if you are able bring along a small tasty bite (store bought or home made-) to share along with others-it helps to sweeten up the meeting!

MS SPARC Grade 6-8 Robotics

We are excited to announce that the MS Grade 6-8 Robotics program will be back for another fall session. This year the Grade 6-8 Robotics team will collaborate to create robots and solve challenges with the goal of attending a scrimmage with local independent school team. There will be emphasis on teamwork, engineering, and programming. This team will not compete the in FFL competition. Upper School Science Teacher, Bryan Adams, will lead the team. The program will meet on Wednesday afternoons starting 9/26, 3:30-5:00PM. Space is very limited so sign up now! For more information and to apply, click here. US Playback Troupe
Oglala Tribe of the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation
Friendly Rewinders, the new US Playback troupe, will perform at the festival at 7 pm on Sunday, Oct. 7. Members of the troupe will also present a workshop called: “It Takes Two: A dual Playback conducting model for teens.” Opening the festival will be singers, dancers, and drummers from the Oglala Tribe of the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation (Colorado) in the Bob L. Smith Quaker Meeting Room. Information on Lakota is also attached.

Sidwell’s hugely popular sale of quality used items is back and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! Book Club and Lecture Series Registration

The Book Club & Lecture Series highlights our extraordinary faculty, provokes thoughtful discussions on books and topics drawn largely from the SFS curriculum, and raises money for financial aid.

The Book Club and Lecture Series will meet seven times this year at different homes, hosted by SFS families. Light food and drink will be provided, and the club is 100% tax deductible. The Fair Share Fund raises unrestricted dollars that go directly into the operating budget, while Events for Student Scholarships activities raise money to support the 23 percent of our students on financial aid.
