Tuesday - September 25, 2012 From the School This Week's Query This week’s query: How can we take our education and use it to contribute to society? Middle School queries for the week are written by the students in the 7th grade Quakerism and the Arts class. They are part of the daily bulletin and are read at Meeting for Worship each week. Student queries begin this week! Notes from Sally This week’s assembly: Capoeira Demonstration This will be in the theater at 2:45 on Friday. We have asked for 8th graders to volunteer for three leadership opportunities: to help us introduce assemblies, to train to lead “green” tours of the Middle School building, and to be Admissions Ambassadors. Please encourage your 8th grader to volunteer! We’re still looking for 1-2 more parents to help our students get our rooftop garden boxes planted. Please contact me if you could help on Wednesdays from 2:45 – 3:30. The seventh and eighth grade A-Z SU will have its first meeting during break and lunch this Friday, September 28 in Leslie Segal’s room. The A-Z SU is an extra-curricular group that meets once a month to consider diversity-related themes. This year we have some exciting guest speakers, and we always have good food! Stay tuned for news on the newly formed fifth and sixth grade A-Z SU as well. Does your child speak Spanish at home or have significant experience in the language? The first meeting of the Heritage Speakers Club will be held Monday, October 1 from 3:40 to 5:00 in Room 304, Señora Pickens’s classroom. We will have a lively conversation and will begin our unit on fútbol. Julia’s empanadas will be served! Contact Señora Pickens with questions. Back-to-School night is next Thursday, October 4th! We will begin in the Meeting Room at 6:00 with a short general meeting and then move to the Middle School; refreshments will be available in the Meeting Room lobby area. Please be sure that you know your son or daughter's homeroom teacher (5/6) or advisor (7/8) because you will move to that classroom after the general meeting. Many teachers use the time during the general meeting to get their classrooms ready; we ask that you not view that time -- or the evening in general -- as a time to drop in for private conversation about your son or daughter. Conference days are the fourth week in October. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please call the Middle School office no later than next Tuesday, October 2, to sign up for child care. Students may be dropped off at the Wannan Gym, next to the Middle School playground. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 8:15 p.m. for 5th grade and around 8:35 p.m. for 6th, 7th and 8th, and students may be picked up in the Dining Room. Call the Middle School office no later than next Tuesday, October 2, to reserve your space for child care. We also encourage you to participate in the Back-to-School Night Food Drive; see the Community Service Corner for information.37th Street in the afternoon: We are working with Hearst to get the buses off the street a little earlier. Quaker Life Committee: Exploring the Idea of Silence The LS Quaker Life Committee invites parents and the Sidwell Friends School community to join us on Tuesday, October 2 (LS Meeting House, 7:00-9:00 pm) for our first reading group of the year. We will explore the idea of silence with such queries as: How are children taught the practice of silence? How do they make it their own? What are its benefits in terms of improved learning and communication? How can adults make space for quiet, open time in children and families' lives?? We will open the discussion using chapter one of Robert Lawrence Smith’s A Quaker Book of Wisdom, and if you are interested in receiving a copy of the book, please contact Amy Henderson at msausten@mac.com (the QLC has 20 copies to distribute). PA Arts Committee US Library Board Room The PA Arts Committee needs your creativity, assistance or just attendance to support our mission this year. The theme of the Arts Committee is year is More than Artrageous. For those who don’t know, Artrageous is a popular All School Arts Festival event where the school community comes together. While Artrageous has become a flagship event of the Arts Committee, this is not the only thing we do. If you have ideas please bring them and if you have any technical skills or performance skills, please come along. Whatever your level of interest we would like to welcome you. Just one suggestion--if you are able bring along a small tasty bite (store bought or home made-) to share along with others-it helps to sweeten up the meeting! Other News From the Admissions Office In an effort to work more closely with current families and faculty/staff who are applying a child for the 2013-14 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2012. Fair Share Volunteers Needed Do you want to volunteer? Volunteer to help with the Fair Share Fund (the annual fund for current parents). The Fair Share Fund raises unrestricted dollars that go directly into the operating budget. Our school is dependent upon these contributions to meet budgeted needs toward financial aid, faculty development, curricular enhancements, and classroom resources. Next-To-New Sale The Next-to-New Sale is just about a month away (October 18-20) and we are behind on donations and low on volunteers! Collection times at the Wisconsin Avenue campus will run through October 13 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 – 10 a.m. and Saturdays from 9 – 11 a.m. We need your help pricing, setting-up, cashiering, managing the floor, and cleaning up. Below is the schedule of when we need volunteers. It is great to know the days/times you can work so that we can make sure we have enough volunteers each day.
