Beau Biden calls Romney-Ryan plans for veterans “unconscionable” – Central Florida Political Pulse – Orlando Sentinel

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, said in Orlando Friday the Republican presidential ticket of Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan could cause “unconscionable” program cuts for American veterans.

After meeting with campaign volunteers and campaign staff at the [President Barack] Obama for America office in Orlando (above, right,) Beau Biden, a Delaware Army National Guard major and Iraq veteran, said vice presidential candidate Ryan’s proposed budget cuts, if applied across the board to federal spending, could eliminate $11 billion for veterans in the first year.

He also slammed presidential candidate Romney’s veterans’ benefits voucher idea, first announced last Veterans Day. Biden said that with 50,000 veterans coming home wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan in the past 10 years, and more on their way, “There is a legitimate debate about the role of government. There should be no debate about our government taking care of our veterans.”

He credited the Obama administration with the largest increases in Veterans Affairs funding of any administration, and said veterans know they can count on funding to continue to grow under Obama and Biden.

“This president gets it. I’m not sure from what I’ve seen of Paul Ryan’s budget he gets it,” Beau Biden said.

Biden said he is pushing the veterans’ issues wherever he campaigns as a surrogate for his father and Obama’s re-election campaign. That was to continue later Friday as he was to speak to the Orange County Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson-Jackson fundraising dinner.
