Just and Unjust Peace

Friday, Sept. 14: What is the meaning of justice in the wake of
massive injustice? Religious traditions have delivered a unique and
promising answer in the concept of reconciliation. This way of thinking
about justice contrasts with the 'liberal peace,' which dominates
current thinking in the international community. The RFP will host a
book event responding to Daniel Philpott's recently published book,
Just and Unjust Peace: A Ethic of Political Reconciliation. A panel of
Christian, Muslim and Jewish scholars will assess the argument for
reconciliation at the theological and philosophical levels and in its
application to political orders like Germany, South Africa and

A Civilized Revolution

Friday, Sept. 14: Featuring Jessica Winegar. This paper analyzes the
relationship between middle class aesthetics and politics in Egypt’s
ongoing revolution. By examining phenomena such as urban beautification
campaigns and Egyptians’ aesthetic judgments of different forms of
political protest, the paper highlights the strong civilizing impulse
at the center of Egypt’s transformation – an impulse that continues to

Brian Atwood: The Changing Landscape of Development Assistance

Monday, Sept. 17: Featuring J. Brian Atwood, Chair of the Development
Assistance Committee for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development. From 1993 to 1999 during the administration of President
William Clinton, Mr Atwood served as Administrator of the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID). The Development

Law's Virtues: Fostering Autonomy and Solidarity in America

Thursday, Sept. 20: Can the law promote moral values even in
pluralistic societies such as the United States? In a new book, Law's
Virtues: Fostering Autonomy and Solidarity in American Society, legal
scholar and moral theologian Cathleen Kaveny (Notre Dame) argues that
it can. In conversation with thinkers as diverse as Thomas Aquinas,
Pope John Paul II and Joseph Raz, she argues that the law rightly
promotes the values of autonomy and solidarity. At the same time, she
cautions that wise lawmakers will not enact mandates that are too far
out of step with the lived moral values of the actual community. At
this lunchtime seminar, Professor Kaveny will present her book and
discuss the relevance of her argument for American politics and society

Food Security in Times of Climate Change and Price Volatility

Thursday, Sept. 20: Washington’s premier international affairs
universities and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are partnering to
host a series of conversations on pressing development issues for Asia
and the world, to be hosted in turn by each university, but open to the
participation of faculty and students from the other universities. The
goal of the conservations is to promote open debate on critical
development issues. The participating universities, listed in

Fida Adely: Gendered Paradoxes

Thursday, Sept. 20: In Gendered Paradoxes, Fida Adely takes readers
into the halls of a Jordanian public School – al-Khatwa High School for
Girls – to examine how the young women there are facing the great
social and economic challenges of today’s Jordan. The demographic
picture in Jordan – with highly educated women largely remaining
outside the formal job market for most of their adult lives – prompted
the World Bank in 2005 to label the country a “gender paradox,” but
Adely argues that this assessment is a fallacy. Showing that the
important place of education in Jordan should not be calculated solely
through an employment lens, she raises fundamental questions about what
constitutes development, progress and empowerment, not just for the
girls of al-Khatwa High School but for women throughout the Middle
