Rice had 10 carries for 68 yards with two touchdowns and three catches for 25 yards Monday against the Bengals. Rice's production came in just about three quarters of action as he scored from both one and seven yards out in the red zone. Though his carries were cut down in Baltimore's new up-tempo approach, the top-five fantasy pick should have no trouble getting his fair share of touches on a weekly basis this season.

Newton completed 22-of-33 passes for 303 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions during Sunday's loss to the Bucs. He also added four rushing yards on five carries. A weird game for the Panthers, who ran the ball only 13 times all afternoon. Newton's favorite target Sunday was Steve Smith, as expected, who caught seven passes on 11 targets for 106 yards. However, Newton did spread the ball around well, connecting with five other receivers, including Brandon LaFell for a touchdown. Newton is a solid passer but if he's not running the ball well, he doesn't belong in the elite tier of fantasy quarterbacks.

Fitzgerald had four catches for 63 yards during Sunday's win over the Seahawks. The quarterback mess in Arizona didn't get any easier for Fitzgerald, who saw both John Skelton and Kevin Kolb on Sunday due to Skelton going down with an ankle injury. Fitzgerald remains an elite talent but he needs a more consistent effort from his quarterback(s) to remains an elite fantasy wideout.


Trent Richardson - (Wed, Sep 12, 2012)
Richardson said Wednesday that his knee has responded well since his NFL debut Sunday, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Richardson, who practiced fully Wednesday, was held to just 39 yards on 19 carries in Week 1, but no other Cleveland running back recorded a carry and we suspect that we'll see a sharper looking Richardson on Sunday against a Cincinnati defense that gave up 122 yards on 23 carries (5.3 yards per carry) to the Ravens on Monday.

Richardson (knee) had 19 carries for 39 yards and one catch for five yards during Sunday's loss to the Eagles. Richardson's 2.1 YPC and long-run of nine yards were a big disappointment for fantasy owners who were excited to see that he was starting Sunday. The Browns' offense was responsible for three field goals and didn't do anything to make defenses not gang up on Richardson. Despite the poor performance, neither Montario Hardesty nor Brandon Jackson recorded a carry, showing fantasy owners that the Browns' backfield is Richardson's.

Richardson (knee) is active and starting Sunday's game against the Eagles, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Despite being limited in practice each day this week, Richardson is expected to play in Week 1. There's some risk that Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson will spell him more frequently as the Browns ease him back into action.

The Browns plan to start Richardson (knee) Sunday against the Eagles, but will manage him throughout the game, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer. Breer notes that Richardson is likely to come out on third downs in favor of Brandon Jackson and adds that on some early downs, Montario Hardesty will relieve the rookie. If Richardson (assuming he is active) gets off to a fast start, then the Browns could adjust on the fly, but the implication here is that the team plans to break him into game action judiciously with the big picture in mind.

NFL Network's Albert Breer expects Richardson (knee surgery) to start Sunday's game against the Eagles. It's still advised that Richardson owners verify his status prior to kickoff. If he is out there Sunday as Breer believes he will be, it's uncertain how much work the Browns plan to give their prized rookie out of the gate, with Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson on hand to spell him.


Frank Gore - (Sun, Sep 9, 2012)
Gore rushed 16 times for 112 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's win over the Packers. If there was any concern that a soft preseason would hamper Gore in the early part of the year, it can safely be put to bed here. Gore looked strong on Sunday, averaging seven yards per carry and ripping off a 23-yard touchdown run that seemed to put the game away in the fourth quarter. With Kendall Hunter seeing a little more time and Brandon Jacobs expected to see action in the future, Gore may not get 20-25 touches per game. However, if the limitation keeps him healthy, he'll probably be able to produce more days like this from start to finish this season.


Jeremy Maclin - (Wed, Sep 12, 2012)
Though the wideout did not practice Wednesday, coach Andy Reid said that Maclin (hip flexor) has not yet been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Ravens, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. On the plus side, Maclin was at the Eagles' Wednesday morning walk-through, but the implication here is that his Week 2 status is looking pretty cloudy at this point. More on Maclin's status no later that Thursday, when the Eagles practice again.

Maclin, who caught seven passes for 96 yards with a TD in Sunday's season opener, is dealing with a hip flexor, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Maclin is "pretty sore" Monday, which suggests that he may be limited in practice this week. So far there's no talk of his Week 2 status being in doubt, but we should know more on that front no later than Wednesday.

Maclin caught seven passes for 96 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's win over the Browns. Maclin was the busiest Eagles' receiver on Sunday, although he caught only half of his targets, as Michael Vick threw 27 incompletions. He remains a solid wideout option, especially for a team that is suddenly very pass-happy.


Vernon Davis - (Wed, Sep 12, 2012)
Davis said the additions of Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, would allow him to find more wide open spaces this season, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. On Sunday, Davis found himself racing alone down the middle on a 29-yard reception in the third quarter as Moss had run a deep route and pulled coverage his way. "What that does is allows the attention to go away from me and toward them," Davis said. "So, that's a good thing. It's a blessing to be able to have Randy come in here and be able to contribute and help us right away." If things continue to remain open for Davis, he has the potential to put up good numbers this season and should be considered a top five tight end this year.


Vernon Davis - (Sun, Sep 9, 2012)
Davis caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown against the Packers on Sunday. Davis is picking things up right where he left off last year. He was targeted five times, second most on the team, and continues to play an important role both in the red zone and one third down. If quarterback Alex Smith remains as efficient as he was on Sunday, then Davis could get back closer to his 2009 numbers than last season's totals.


Tony Gonzalez - (Sun, Sep 9, 2012)
Gonzalez caught five balls for 53 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Chiefs. Gonzalez should profit from being in a very high-powered offense all season. He'll likely eclipse 100 touchdowns at some point this season.

Bush had 12 carries for 42 yards and two touchdowns Sunday against the Colts. A bulk of Bush's work came in mop up duty, but the main thing to take away is the two touchdowns. Bush scored twice from the goal line and will continue to be used in that role for the foreseeable future, making him an intriguing flex option each week.


Ben Tate - (Sun, Sep 9, 2012)
Tate (head) had five carries for six yards and three catches for 22 yards during Sunday's win over the Dolphins. Arian Foster was active after coming in as a game-time decision and did most of the work in the Texans' backfield, rushing for 79 yards and two touchdowns. While Tate was able to be a successful complement to Foster in a few games last year, Sunday was not a repeat of those performances.

Akers made all three of his extra points and was 3-for-3 on fields goals, including a record-tying 63-yarder at the end of the first half. While it's hard to imagine Akers repeating his record-setting season from last year, he's certainly going to put up his fair share of points again this season. The team obviously has enough faith in him from long distances so the opportunities will be plentiful again, although he might not get as much help from the crossbar every time out.


Brent Celek - (Mon, Sep 10, 2012)
Celek caught four passes for 65 yards against the Browns on Sunday. Considering the Eagles threw the ball 56 times, it's not the most efficient showing for Celek. He's ideally a backup tight end in most leagues.

Smith completed 20-of-26 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns and rushed five times for 13 yards during Sunday's 30-22 win over the Packers. A little bit of leadership and mistake-free football is really what the 49ers are hoping to get out of Smith this year and Sunday was a perfect example of what they want. He was efficient in the passing game, accurate with his throws and hit a pair of touchdowns, a 14-yard strike to new receiver Randy Moss and a four-yarder to old stand-by Vernon Davis. He's not going to win you any fantasy championships, but if he has more games like this, he'll definitely be an adequate bye-week replacement. He did, however, set the 49ers record for most regular-season passes (185) without an interception.
