Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. Greetings! After wild winter snow storms and record breaking rainy days, spring in Portland is finally breaking through with a few sunny days! I hope spring is breaking through for all of you! JVC Northwest is blessed to be looking at another year of expansion for 2017-18. We are thrilled to be going back to Bend, Ore. after a number of years of hiatus. Four JVs will be focused on providing health outreach to children, seniors, and those with on-going health issues in the tri-county area. In 2017-18, we hope to have 160 JVs in the field, up from 148 this year. Our JV EnCorps program is also growing, with the launch of our seventh JV EnCorps community in Tacoma, Wash. this fall. We are expecting to have over 100 JV EnCorps members in 2017-18. Another bit of news is that the JVC Northwest Board of Directors has generously offered me a three month sabbatical, which will begin on June 5th. I will return right after Labor Day in September. JVC Northwest is blessed with a strong board and a very capable, competent staff which will be led through these three months by our Senior Managers: Anne Douglas, Director of Advancement; David Holcomb, Business Manager; and Amy Potthast, Director of Programs. In peace, JVC Northwest News 2017 Seattle Gathering and Fundraiser - Celebrating our Roots Saturday June 3, 2017, Seattle University, Seattle, Wash. Join us for our annual event that includes Mass, social hour, dinner and an evening program featuring former volunteer and current JV speakers, the Fr. Jack Morris, S.J. Memorial Award, a raffle, and more! This year's event will commemorate and honor all volunteers who served at Copper Valley School (CVS) in Alaska. The entire JVC Northwest community is invited to attend, with a special invitation to those who served at, attended, or worked at CVS. If you are interested in hosting former Copper Valley volunteers traveling from out of town, please email Zach at outreach@jvcnorthwest.org. Registration can be found here. Copper Valley Memorabilia As we prepare to honor and commemorate those who served at Copper Valley School at our annual Seattle dinner and fundraiser, we're looking for any Copper Valley items, pictures, and memorabilia we can display at the event. If you have any of these items and are willing to give or lend them to JVC Northwest for our event (and/or our archives) we'd greatly appreciate it. Apply today to be part of the JV EnCorps Program JV EnCorps convenes and supports volunteers 50 and older in part- time, meaningful service positions where they have a direct impact on people living on the margins. JVEnCorps members gather monthly from September-June to explore the four core values of community, social and ecological justice, simple living, and spirituality. There are JVEnCorps communities in Seattle, Spokane, and Tacoma, Wash., as well as Portland and Bend, Ore. The application deadline for the 2017-18 year is August 15th. AmeriCorps Stories of Service JV AmeriCorps member Cat Cassidy (Missoula, MT ’16-17) “Each day that I volunteer with the YWCA’s domestic violence shelter, I experience the multifaceted ways in which trauma affects childhood development and behavior.” In our latest AmeriCorps blog, JV AmeriCorps member Cat Cassidy describes the capacity building project she implemented at the YWCA of Missoula in response to the needs of the children she advocates for as secondary survivors of abuse. Events, Resources, & Reflections Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church Chris Lowney's just published his most recent book, "Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church" and it is now available for purchase. Contemplative Leaders in Action (CLA) Applications Available Contemplative Leaders in Action (CLA) is now accepting applications for its 2017-2019 cohorts. If you, or someone you know, is in interested participating in a two-year Ignatian spirituality and leadership formation program with other young adults in their 20's and 30's, you are encouraged to apply. Click here to apply or to nominate a candidate. “Calling, Service, and Justice: Stories from Spiritual Entrepreneurs” - Speaker Series May 21, 6-7:30 p.m., The Potter's House, Washington D.C. This speaker series will feature four inspirational speakers reflecting on their journeys inward to face questions, doubts, and fears – and to receive grace and insight – about calling. They’ll also share how that led to inspired action to serve communities, empower others, and seek justice. They'll share what they did, what God did, what has happened, and what comes next. Agape Community Annual Workday June 10, Agape Community, Ware, Mass. Join lots of other friends of Agape at the community for a day of homesteading, wood-splitting, gardening and preparing the community for the Fall and Winter. Great companionship, singing, and pot-luck in the evening. Agape workdays are a chance to meet neighbors, new volunteers and interns at Agape. Enjoying the great outdoors we work together splitting and stacking wood, preparing and seeding the garden, doing carpentry projects as well as well as other essential tasks. Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN) Student Leadership Conference June 27-29, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. College of the Holy Cross is hosting the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN) Student Leadership Conference this summer (June 27-29). The theme of the conference is Principles in Crisis: Refugees and Responsibility. Just as refugees are compelled to cross borders by conditions of vulnerability, so too are we morally compelled to respond to human suffering wherever it exists. This conference is an excellent opportunity to engage and network with students, staff, and faculty from various Jesuit Universities, as well as with local and national community partners. The conference will feature keynote sessions led by Dr. Michael Barnett (George Washington University), Dr. David Hollenbach, S.J. (Georgetown University), Dr. Mark Potter (Newton Country Day School, Kino Border Initiative), and Dr. Stephanie Russell (AJCU). Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center Retreats Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center, on the shoreline of Trout Lake in Arbor Vitae, Wisc., has been a place of rest, leisure, renewal, prayer, rejuvenation, play, inspiration and peacefulness since 1992. Marywood is open to all interested people (lay, religious, clergy) of all denominations and religious beliefs for renewal and retreat. A wide variety of programs and retreats are scheduled throughout the year. Catholic Volunteer Network Discernment Retreats Catholic Volunteer Network now hosts discernment retreats for current volunteers and alumni who are contemplating their next steps. Join CVN for a weekend retreat and enjoy the opportunity to get away from the busyness of life and join with others in the spirit of discernment. These retreats are made available free of charge thanks to the support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Travel stipends are also available.
