As you may recall, I moved into a new position at Save the Children last year, leading an effort to mobilize Americans to end preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths globally and to ensure that every child in the U.S. has access to high-quality early childhood education. I am excited to announce that we have launched a 501(c)(4) organization called the Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) to help us achieve those goals. With new advocacy capacity and the ability to hold our elected officials accountable, SCAN aims to move our leaders to act. No longer will we tolerate politicians declaring that children are our most precious resource and then slashing the very programs that children depend on to survive and thrive. This is a strong statement by Save the Children and I am honored to be leading the charge as President of SCAN. One of SCAN’s very first initiatives centers on the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit, which began today in Washington, DC. With a theme of “Investing in the Next Generation,” I cannot imagine a more important topic for our world leaders to address than maternal, newborn and child survival. As President Paul Kagame of Rwanda told me recently, “There is no next generation if our mothers and babies are dying.” SCAN is pushing for a bold, new investment by the U.S. to save the lives of 8 million children and 350,000 mothers by 2020. President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and I discussed the need for such an investment in our op-ed in The Hill and The Huffington Post last week. The instructions are below and I hope you will lend your voice to this important issue. I will be sharing much more about SCAN’s efforts in the coming weeks and months.
