At the end of each month, we highlight some of the advocacy work, events, and other activities of the Truman community across the nation. This month, Truman worked on planning our annual conference, began reflection on the 100th anniversary of World War I, and discussed the importance of alliances around the world. Ashley Moran Ashley M. Moran directs the State Fragility Initiative at the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin, where she leads research on state fragility dynamics, governance intervention strategies, and constitutional order. Overseas, Moran previously served as parliamentary advisor in the Republic of Georgia for the National Democratic Institute, ran democratic reform programs and trainings in Iraq and Azerbaijan, and designed rule of law programs in Kyrgyzstan. She holds an MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and is currently pursuing a PhD in comparative constitutional law at the University of Texas at Austin. Moran has spearheaded the Truman Texas Chapter’s work with local partners like Refugee Council USA, Refugee Services of Texas, Caritas, and the Texas faith-based community to brief national and state legislators and their staffs on refugee resettlement, security screening processes, and community support for refugees. All of the Truman members involved in this effort have previously served with the U.S. military, U.S. government, or international organizations in conflict zones, and have personal connections to refugees and humanitarian crises. Moran has led the way in dispelling myths and educating lawmakers who may be new to these issues in order to ensure that policymaking is guided by our core national values and principled national security policy. September TBA: Annual Truman Awards Dinner in Washington, DC TruCon17: Send Your MissionThis June, Truman Center for National Policy and Truman National Security Project are hosting our annual conference, TruCon17: Send Your Mission. The theme for the conference is named for the motto of Harry Truman’s own U.S. Army unit, whose unconditional, matter-of-fact ethos of “Send Your Mission” served them well as they fought across Europe in WWI 100 years ago. Truman and his soldiers fought because they believed in their cause, and we too are gearing up to fight for our worldview like never before. If you are interested in being a sponsor of this event, please click http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6aca9e013a2d8027090930bf7e0accdc68d679166aa87f3893d18078dc28a03a91505418e81a8abcd here for more information. WWI and Truman National Security Project With the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I in April 2017, Truman is working with our Chapters and Expert Groups to start discussions about lessons from the past and implications for the future. Speaker series events around the country will examine the global shifts in power dynamics from World War I to the present and determine how America can best lead in the 21st century. The first event in this series will be hosted next month; additional details will be announced soon. Chicago Salon on NATO and RussiaOn April 12, Truman National Security Project Board Member Anne Wedner hosted a salon at her home in Chicago. The salon discussion centered around the U.S. relationship with NATO and Russia under the Trump Administration. Attendees included Truman President and CEO Michael Breen, members of the Chicago Chapter, and community members. Due to high interest in such events, another Chicago Salon will be held in early fall. 04/01/17, The Fayetteville Observer, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6b9061cc930eb063b4e1b310c70403fb24ef91c68c78d0ebcaad42ea1e18fdd06bb98abdbdb236bb3 Don’t leave our Afghan interpreters behind , by Ryan McGill, Truman Political Partner Congress should work to uphold the Special Immigration Visa Program, which authorizes the State Department to issue visas to Iraqi and Afghan interpreters and other civilian partners who served alongside U.S. forces in combat. 04/03/17, World Policy Blog, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6064fe0ceacd4085875490490d6bfd29bee1fb2188f6a5c95c75b2be5326ffcea3192640323bd4b7b Colombia’s Peace Process Comes at a Price , by Amanda Mattingly, Truman Security Fellow During the negotiation process with the rebel group known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos’ administration has allowed for a flourishing of coca and a surge in cocaine production among Colombian farmers. 04/03/17, Fusion, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a67a28ef0d91d9d6d1fa2af38f69af07e81c49327b05c3565da1862efc4384d7a1ab08921e4f8047ce Vets Going into Clean Energy are Upset Trump Won’t Seize the Opportunity Too , quotes Michael Breen, President and CEO of Truman, and Andrea Marr, Truman Defense Council Veterans enter areas of clean energy technology and manufacturing at higher rates than other industries because on the front lines, they come face to face with the threats climate change poses and are exposed to the inherent unsustainability of fossil fuels--something the Trump Administration unfortunately denies and ignores. 04/04/17, Truman Doctrine Blog, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6d8b3deecbcb5830934312b044f19fed5f8bd022de884e6d472722d94a5d5589324fba6ab67f24760 The Foundations of Our Freedom , by Sally Painter, Truman National Security Board Member Although international institutions warrant reforms and course corrections at times, \u200awe must never forget or underestimate the benefits that they have given us and the collaborative approach to freedom and security that they represent. 04/05/17, The Diplomat, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6e596b9fbf36115abc39d6153d8f43202678aa285bfe345cc0d527de88bf7386f3bda154c9e7aab29 Cybersecurity Must Top Agenda as Trump Hosts Xi , by Jesse Heatley, Truman Security Fellow Since China’s cyber attacks and cyber policies continue to threaten the growth prospects of America’s top technology and manufacturing companies, President Trump must provide much more than lip service if he truly seeks to support American jobs and companies. 04/06/17, Truman Doctrine Blog, http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6a420524308e419a5ebc6d8d3bf6d81b51c14fae9cd47eca4ec61378755fc49037349efeee350b004 All Options on North Korea Should Include Diplomacy , by Peter Crail, Truman Security Fellow While diplomatic efforts have not yet resulted in North Korea’s denuclearization, its nuclear and missile capabilities would likely far exceed what they are today in the absence of past diplomatic agreements that have helped avoid a devastatingly costly war. http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a64762b4828ccf5cec1847f76856a9425e5d90ed9c314840511c8d49bf4b33592c18ac8a0667525827 http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6b25539c61ed1b750794bd86ba461e8eb14c3235051798b1ac9e78145ea7f8f46b2cfcf86762ca89a http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6b25539c61ed1b750794bd86ba461e8eb14c3235051798b1ac9e78145ea7f8f46b2cfcf86762ca89a Facebook http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a674eacf8bb3167598f1e6c91cfe5db478317f60ea3c1883f9ed7d4e6a5c35aa2d81261d13a45e5907 http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a674eacf8bb3167598f1e6c91cfe5db478317f60ea3c1883f9ed7d4e6a5c35aa2d81261d13a45e5907 Twitter http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6a50ef683dbe9c0549b420e057b205151e7ef18906bd44a41b9401c93a5196c04130e2aa37d6d6782 http://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=c3ee2bd43c4e70a6a50ef683dbe9c0549b420e057b205151e7ef18906bd44a41b9401c93a5196c04130e2aa37d6d6782 YouTube ---------------------------------------- This email was sent by: Truman National Security Project 1250 I Street, NW, Suite 500 Washington, DC, 20005, US We respect your right to privacy - visit the following URL to view our policy.
