** AMTI Unveils New Design, Functionality for Claims Map (https://amti.csis.org/maritime-claims-map/)

AMTI is pleased to announce the launch of a brand-new, overhauled version of its maritime claims map. The maritime claims map is a tool that allows users to compare the maritime claims (such as territorial seas, exclusive economic zones, or continental shelf) of claimants in the Asia Pacific. This new version presents the same data as the old map—all based on careful verification of claimants’ international agreements, domestic legislation, and public submission of claims—but now allows users to toggle each claimant and type of claim on and off, offering an enhanced ability to focus on relevant claim lines and disable irrelevant ones. The new map also presents a more colorful palette allowing easy distinction between neighboring claims.

As before, no maritime entitlements are shown from effectively dormant territorial claims, such as those of Taiwan over mainland China or the Philippines over North Borneo, unless they have been expressly declared.

In the South China Sea, maritime entitlements from the Paracel and Spratly Islands are not shown due to a lack of clarity about what each country claims. This will be updated as more clarity is given. China’s nine-dash line and Taiwan’s U-shaped line in the South China Sea are depicted as separate claim types due to their continued ambiguity.
