Democrat Stacey Abrams has won her party's nomination for governor of Georgia, defeating state Rep. Stacey Evans.

Abrams, who is vying to become the first black female governor in U.S. history, had 74 percent of the vote to Evans' 26 percent when the Associated Press called the race with 30 percent of precincts reporting.

Abrams was endorsed by a wide constellation of prominent Democratic leaders and liberal outside groups, including figures both aligned with the establishment wing and the activist wing. Both Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have given support to Abrams.

The Republican primary has not yet been called.
