Every year, the Fulbright Program awards grants to nearly 2,000 students, artists, and scholars across disciplines and around the world. This year, 19 of Penn’s Fulbright recipients graduated with the Class of 2018. Participants were chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential and will use their grants to study, teach English, and conduct research abroad.

Fencer Ashley Marcus, a Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup awardee, talks about her commitment to fighting bullying and sexual violence and to protecting children. A May graduate from Golden Beach, Fla., Marcus has been unwavering in her fight on multiple fronts, including helping to rewrite legislation, authoring a children’s book, and reaching out to children, teenagers, and adults. Last summer, she interned at the Department of Justice conducting research on sex trafficking.

New graduates Linda Lin of Beijing and Braden Cordivari of Elverson, Pa., along with rising senior Fiona Jensen-Hitch of Santa Fe, curated a Penn Museum exhibit about storytelling. The showcase includes many items from the Museum’s collection, including a clay and paint Cochiti figure and a cuneiform tablet from Iraq, circa 1730 BCE, with the short tale of Gilgamesh written in Sumerian.

Men’s lacrosse player Connor Keating has been named a Third-Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse. A long-stick midfielder, Keating, from Gladwyne, Pa., recently concluded a historic career at Penn. The recent graduate was a three-time First-Team All-Ivy selection, and graduates as the highest-scoring long stick in the country with 41 points on 31 career goals and 10 assists.

Prateek Agarwal of the joint School of Medicine and Wharton MD/MBA program, along with Daniel Zhang and Divyansh Agarwal of the School of Medicine (above left to right) created a start-up, Sanguis. The company, which produces an inexpensive, portable blood cell counting device, could improve the lives of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy by allowing them to test their neutrophil levels at home. The creators say it should be ‘as easy as a finger prick.’

Members of the defending Ivy League champion men’s basketball team are heading to Europe where they will play three games against Italian opposition. “While the games we will play in Italy will be competitive and helpful to our team’s on-court development,” says head coach Steve Donahue, “the cultural experiences and the team bonding are the real reasons why we are so excited for a trip like this.”

Different Parkinson’s-related brain disorders are characterized by misfolded proteins embedded in cells. A team from the Perelman School of Medicine, led by Virginia M.-Y. Lee and Chao Peng, discovered that the type of cell affected dictates which disease strain may emerge. The finding, published in Nature, is the first of its kind for a neurodegenerative brain disorder.

In a new study on gun violence in movies, researchers from the Annenberg Public Policy Center determined that the MPAA’s PG-13 movie rating is “misleading.” The study assessed the effects of “justified vs. unjustified” violence on parents’ willingness to allow children to view violent PG-13 films. While parents and guardians in the study were more willing to allow children to watch justified violence, they believed the content was more appropriate for teens 15 and up.
